A series of timber ponds were spread along the beach from Port Glasgow to Langbank for around 3 miles. The stumps of the posts of these former ponds can be clearly seen.
Timber from North America was stored and matured in these ponds until used by local shipbuilders. Ponds continued to be developed until around 1890. After a long decline the ponds fell out of use at the end of the Great War. Beach recovery at several locations has reduced the number of surviving ponds.
Timber ponds also stretched along the shortline westwards from Port Glasgow to beyond Greenock but have been obliterated by subsequent developments.
