Shares in Scottish transport giant FirstGroup have risen four per cent after the company said its rail and bus operations performed better than expected in the first half despite the challenges posed by the surge in inflation.

Hull Trains has been named Best in Class at a national awards ceremony to recognise the most reliable fleets in the railway industry. The Hitachi built and maintained (Class 802s) Paragon fleet won the award due to the high levels of reliability achieved across 2022.

Thousands of rail passengers impacted by an IT error will be reimbursed for the inconvenience they experienced when attempting to claim compensation for a delayed journey. FirstGroup, which runs Avanti West Coast, Great Western Railway, South Western Railway and TransPennine Express and open-access operators Hull Trains and Lumo, self-reported the issue to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) after a recent audit identified the issue. When a passenger submits a Delay Repay claim to the wrong train company, the claim should be redirected to the appropriate train company for processing.

Due to the latest Covid lockdown in England, Hull Trains will be temporarily suspending all train services from 00:01 Thursday 5 November 2020. This will be the second time the operators direct rail services between Hull and London have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the national lockdowns implemented the government this week.

The coronavirus lockdown could put the UK's smallest rail operator out of business, MPs have said.
Conservative MP David Davis and Labour's Diana Johnson have written to the Department for Transport (DfT) asking for support for Hull Trains. The MPs claimed without assistance there was 'genuine doubt about their commercial survival'. The DfT said it was discussing support with Hull Trains and 'was keen to see them return to the network.' Contracts worth £60m for Hitachi Rail Europe to supply and maintain five AT300 five-car electro-diesel multiple-units for use by open access company Hull Trains were finalised by the operator's parent company FirstGroup and leasing company Angel Trains on November 2.
This follows the granting of a 10-year track access agreement to the Yorkshire “ London open access operator, running from 2019 until December 2029. Hitachi is to build the AT300 trainsets at its plant at Newton Aycliffe in County Durham, and maintain them at Bounds Green depot in north London. They are expected to come into service in 2019, running under 25 kV 50 Hz electrification on the East Coast Main Line and continuing on diesel power to Hull and Beverley.
