In terms of convenience, Edinburgh Waverley, with its famous in and out ramps, was pretty much the perfect station for motorists in the post-war era. Connecting the English capital and Perth via Edinburgh Waverley, the first car-sleeper rail services debuted in 1955 and allowed Scots motorists the freedom of taking their car on their holidays while avoiding the gruelling 450-mile drive south.

The Government has for the first time signalled that it is considering making Carlisle a major stopping point for the transformative High Speed 2 rail project. The consultation proposes that Carlisle becomes the point at which 200m trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh stop, and the 400m services suitable for the high speed line begin. To accommodate this, it is proposed that Carlisles platforms three and four are extended, and platform two is filled in.

Campaigners say the closure of the West Coast Main Line due to storm damage has strengthened their case to extend the Borders Railway to Carlisle.
Repair works are expected to continue at the Lamington Viaduct in South Lanarkshire until March. The Campaign for Borders Rail said taking the line beyond its Tweedbank terminus would create an alternative route between Edinburgh and Carlisle. A feasibility study is planned into the viability of lengthening the route. The Edinburgh to Tweedbank line opened to passengers last year but the CBR would like to see that taken on to Carlisle in due course. 'The current terminus of the Borders Railway at Tweedbank between Galashiels and Melrose should only be regarded as temporary,' said chairman Allan McLean. (Permalink) Borders Railway Carlisle |
