I can't argue that Edinburgh has been short-changed when it comes to new train stations serving routes into the capital, but when even small places like Reston get a new stop on the east coast mainline - East Linton will get one next year - it makes the absence of concrete plans for a station at Winchburgh all the more stark.

Now fears are growing that without a station, commuters will be left with little option but to use their car to get to work in the Capital, generating extra traffic, increasing congestion and undermining efforts to combat pollution and reduce emissions to net zero by 2030.

An SNP councillor has accused the Labour led administration on the council of being suckered by the developers. It is understood that the increase in costs for the station alone may be around £10 million. At Winchburgh, a core development area (CDA), the station was one of a range of promised infrastructure upgrades.
