An iconic Shields Ferry is celebrating 30 years of service, having carried more than seven million customers since she was first launched. The Pride of the Tyne has provided daily river crossings since 1993, connecting South Shields and North Shields. The Pride has given outstanding service over three decades, making in excess of 300,000 crossings. She was one of the last ships to be built at the Swan Hunter yard in Wallsend before it was closed.

A Metro bridge which serves one of the networks busiest routes between Newcastle and North Tyneside is to be completely replaced this summer in a £3m project - creating more space for better bus links and road freight to North Shields Fish Quay. The Tanners Bank bridge, which is located on the Metro line between Tynemouth and North Shields, is to be removed to allow an entirely new bridge to be constructed in its place. North Tyneside Council and Nexus are working in partnership to improve this key road into the Fish Quay as part of the councils wider North Shields regeneration plan, as well as making sure the Metro can run smoothly for decades to come.

The creation of a modern and convenient transport hub in North Shields has taken a major step forward. Set to bring public transport together into one central place and attract more people to the town centre, North Tyneside Councils proposed transport hub will be located on the site of the former Co-op building on Bedford Street. The hub will provide a modern and convenient, high-quality facility bringing all bus services in the town together and closer to the Metro, taxis and links to cycling infrastructure making it easier for people to choose cleaner, greener forms of travel.

Ambitious plans for a new transport hub with town square in North Shields and walkway linking the town centre to the Fish Quay have been submitted. The proposals are part of North Tyneside Councils Ambition for North Shields and the Fish Quay Masterplan, aimed at breathing new life into the town centre and riverside and providing the right environment to support businesses, leisure users and retail. Community groups, residents and businesses have all been asked for their views to help refine the designs ahead of the plans officially being lodged. The proposed transport hub will provide a modern and convenient, high-quality facility bringing all bus services in the town together and closer to Metro, taxis and links to cycling infrastructure making it easier for people to choose cleaner, greener forms of travel.

A new landing for the Shields Ferry has moved a step closer after £8.8m of funding was given the green light. Nexus wants to relocate the north landing to Western Quay, bringing the ferry into the heart of the North Shields Fish Quay regeneration area, with easy links to the town centre and Riverside Walkway.
The project is being jointly funded by Nexus, the public body which owns and operates the cross-Tyne ferry service, and £5m from government's Getting Building Fund, which is managed in the region by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.
