The 2021 reopening of the Dartmoor Line (a portion of the former northern route mainline between Plymouth and Exeter) and the announcement of a second station for Okehampton have advanced the case for a full reopening of the northern route and a potential reintroduction of the former line between Okehampton and Bude, however advancements in modern technology have ensured that West Devon's former railway network will never be fully restored.

The Dartmoor Line between Okehampton and Exeter will officially reopen for year-round services on 20 November, ahead of schedule. It is the first former line to open under the Government's Restoring Your Railway manifesto commitment. Tickets will go on sale today (12 October) for trains running every 2 hours, increasing to hourly from May 2022.

Network Rail is asking people to avoid attempting to access the Dartmoor Line as the number of trains travelling along the railway increases from next week (week commencing 20 September).

Two Mark 1 railway carriages are being moved hundreds of miles to a museum in Northumberland. The coaches are being transported from Okehampton in Devon, with the first scheduled to arrive at The Heritage Centre in Bellingham on Tuesday.
