Concrete frame and substructure specialist Expanded started work on site last month. The Old Oak Common Station box will be 850m long - the length of eight football pitches - 690,000 cubic meters of clay will be removed, enough to fill eight Royal Albert Halls.

HS2 has received planning approval for Old Oak Common station in west London. It will be the largest new railway station ever built in the UK, with 14 platforms (six high-speed and eight conventional platforms) built in a huge underground box 850 metres long.

The cost of HS2 should be slashed by limiting the speed of trains and making its London terminus Old Oak Common rather than Euston, according to a critical House of Lords report, which warns that better northern rail connections could be lost if the project blows its budget. In a report that could stoke further doubts over high-speed rail after Conservative leadership candidates discussed axing the project, the Lords economic affairs committee said it was far from convinced that the £55.7bn price was credible, and the government should publish a new cost-benefit analysis.
