The bus sector regularly calls for its vehicles to be given priority on our congested roads but, as Covid recovery funding ends, we are also calling for parity, if not priority, within the government's transport budget and policy aspirations. Buses are the predominant mode of public transport in Scotland, responsible for over 75 per cent of all such trips. They are flexible, sustainable, and accessible, taking people to work and school and connecting Scotland communities.

The precarious funding structure of the network and franchisees were laid by the Office for Rail and Road revealed that taxpayers pumped in £13.3billion in the year to March.

The Scottish Government paid ScotRail £237.3m more subsidy between March and September last year than the corresponding period of the previous year because of Covid-19. Transport Scotland paid operator Abellio £475.1m during the Emergency Measures Agreement that operated from 1 March to September. This is twice the £237.8 paid to the operator for the corresponding period of 2019.
