Niddrie West Junction: Class 20 no D8120 approaches Niddrie West Junction in February 1970 with an unfitted freight from Millerhill, possibly the 14.56 to Mossend running early. This was booked as a class 8 freight but the headcode discs have unhelpfully not been deployed on this occasion. Niddrie West Junction: Clayton no 8579 approaches Niddrie West Junction from Niddrie North in February 1970 with Edinburgh area trip working E18 carrying grain from Leith South to Gorgie. Despite the rather primitive Leith General Warehousing wooden bodied stock, this must surely qualify as a block working! The trackbed of part of the Lothian Lines can be seen on the left.

The train has recently cleared Dock Street Tunnel shortly after leaving Dundee station. Camperdown Junction signal box towers over the scene, with the the Blue Circle cement terminal standing beyond and the spire of St Paul's Cathedral visible in the left background. Ballater: Ballater station was in need of some renovation in 1997 but was in use (as 'The Station Restaurant' amongst other things) and in a generally good state of repair. This view looks east towards Aberdeen. This building dated from the 1886 major reconstruction of the station during which a royal waiting room was provided, the track layout considerably altered and new carriage shed provided.

Bridge of Gairn: View west to Braemar from the trackbed at Bridge of Gairn, just west of Ballater. When the line arrived at Ballater in 1866 the trackbed did not extend beyond. Shortly afterwards earthworks were continued west, under a new road bridge west of the station, to Bridge of Gairn before work ceased. These earthworks remain in fairly good repair for some of the length, now being a dirt road as seen here. After Royal involvement blocked the railway's extension west to Braemar, one of several plans for this extension was for it to meet a tramway to Ballochbuie Forest, just east of Braemar, for timber extraction.

Ballater: View west to the terminus at Ballater in 1997. The long main platform is in the centre, the goods yard was to the right, and the bay platform and carriage sheds were to the left. See image [[36796]].

In later years the platform was served by the unique Battery Electric Multiple Unit set which was built specifically for the line in the 1950s. The North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board pushed the British Transport Commission to assess the concept, both hoping for a reduction in costs. The train was charged at Ballater and Aberdeen. It can now be found on the Deeside Railway at Milton of Crathes.

Torphins: View east to Aberdeen at Torphins in 1997 taken from station road. This road was severed when the railway opened, being replaced by a new road with an overbridge (Bridge Crescent) further west, the road now runs through the site again obliterating much of the station.

But not all. The grassy area was the approach road, from the left, to the station which was to the right. The post-railway house seen on the right is now a pottery, gallery and coffee house called Platform 22. The bridge remains standing a little distance behind the camera.

Pinhao: Pinhao is on the Porto to Pocinho line through Portugals Douro Valley. The station is renowned for the beautiful tiled wall pictures depicting local scenes. The last depot switcher was metre gauge 0-4-0T No. E1, built by Henschel in 1922, which would shunt locomotives of both gauges and make up narrow gauge freights. It was preserved on a plinth after withdrawal in the 1980s and can still be seen from the Regua station platforms. See image [[43368]] of this locomotive when still in service.

Manchester Liverpool Road: The Manchester Liverpool Road station building of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway is often considered the world's first passenger terminus. It is seen at street level on 4 February 2010 almost 180 years after it was opened on 15 September 1830 by the Duke of Wellington. Although it only operated as a passenger station until May 1844, it continued in use as a goods depot until 1975. The red brick building on the corner, which predates the station itself, was purchased by the railway company and used as the superintendent's house. Today the station forms part of the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry and still contains several original features.

Tweedbank: During the day anyway there seems to be a set stabled at Tweedbank's Platform 2 (left) while Edinburgh trains come and go from Platform 1. I have long given up hope that the last units will ever be painted out of the pre-2008 livery. At least it gives a bit of variety. 4th February 2018

2013Swiss love affair with rail turns sour [BBC News]The Swiss have long been proud of their railways but a new, strict ticketing policy is turning the love affair sour. As I write this, I am travelling home watching the sun set over the mountains which flank Lake Geneva. It is bitterly cold, there has been a good deal of snow, but the train is right on time. It is warm and I have a seat. I feel pleasantly smug as I look out at the rush hour traffic on the motorway. I feel smugger still as the aroma of fresh coffee heralds the arrival of the drinks service. Swiss friends often tell me, proudly, that their rail service is the best in the world, but recently, the Swiss love affair with their railway has turned a little sour.

Network Rail said it was pulling all repair staff away from working on the section of track at Dawlish. The infrastructure owner said up to 50m (165ft) of track was unsafe after supporting ballast was washed away this week, but it was stopping work because fresh storms were due to hit the coast. It said it hoped trains would run again by Friday at the earliest.
2015The railway lines alarmingly close to the sea [BBC] The collapse of the railway line at Dawlish last year generated major headlines but it^s not the only stretch under threat. The coastal railway line from Carlisle to Barrow-in-Furness is one of the most scenic in Britain. In places it runs at the foot of cliffs immediately above the water. That means it^s also one of the most vulnerable lines in the country, always at risk from the destructive power of the sea, or from rock falls, or from both. [From Richard Buckby]

But he was accused of getting on the train at the next stop, Preston, 25 miles south, where the price is £350. The father-of-one was left embarrassed as he was accused by ticket collectors on the train of getting on at Preston, ordered to buy another ticket or be fined and detained at Euston where British Transport Police were waiting.
2017Woman praises train guard after racist attack [BBC News]A woman has praised a guard who came to her aid after she and her young son were racially abused on a train. Sanaa Shahid and her four-year-old son were accosted by solicitor Alexander MacKinnon as they travelled on the Glasgow-bound service from London. The Virgin Trains guard challenged MacKinnon and eventually removed him from the train. MacKinnon admitted the racially aggravated offence at Carlisle Magistrates Court on Tuesday. After this, the line drops to 800 feet to go through the Upper Spey valley, overlooked by the Cairngorm mountain range.
