Chirk Viaduct: 40185 comes off Chirk Viaduct with a southbound block oil train, probably from the Stanlow refinery, in June 1974. The 'J' in the reporting code indicates the LMR's Shrewsbury Division, which included Aberystwyth, a likely destination for such a train at that time.
Langwathby: Class 47 47629, seen passing Langwathby on a southbound special excursion in 1988. The following year the former D1966 became 47828 and a long career continued. Barnhill: Hunting pink is red, red tape is pink, and Strathclyde red is... orange. While it looked OK on older stock it doesn't to me seem quite right on a 320, or is this just with hindsight? At Barnill in June 1998 320302 calls with a Milngavie service.
Barrhead: DMU 101689 slips into the bay platform at Barrhead on 4 June 1998 with a stopping Service from Glasgow Central. Haymarket: It's 17.07 on 4 June and the daily Carnoustie service pulls out in the care of a Class 158 (leading) and a 170. These mixed formations are not uncommon on east coast services. The train will split at Dundee and only the 158 will go forward to Carnoustie. This is not necessarily because the 170 is urgently needed in Dundee, but simply because 5 coaches is way too long for the platforms at Balmossie and Golf Street which can just squeeze in three. Edinburgh Waverley: The roof glazing at Waverley may be about to be cleaned or replaced, but that doesn't mean the station is particularly gloomy at the moment. 322 481 for North Berwick picks up plenty of custom at a sun-drenched platform 11 on 4 June. This is one of the two daily services which have come from Glasgow Central via Carstairs. These workings, back and forth, allow transfer to and from Shields depot and will presumably cease when Airdie to Bathgate opens in December.

Salford Central: On the left a Class 156 DMU heading to Stalybridge while on the right is a Class 150 heading to Kirkby call at Salford Central on 04 June 2016. Significant improvements have been proposed for this station at platform level.
Whitrope Summit: 26040 parked at the south end of the Whitrope site. Access with permission.
Bo'ness: The last mainline lower quadrant removed from Stirling in 2000 is now on display at Bo'ness.
Salford Crescent: Salford Crescent viewed towards Windsor Bridge North Jct with a DMU approaching the station with a service off the Bolton line.
Manchester Liverpool Road: 0-4-0ST Agecroft No.1 takes visitors to the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry on a short ride in two replica L&M coaches. On the right is an English Electric 4w battery loco, works number 1378 of 1944.
Matlock Riverside: After completion of electrification of the WCML from London to Manchester in 1966, the splendidly laid out Midland Railway route between Derby and Manchester was regarded as redundant by 'those-that-know-best'. Local services ceased in 1967 and all services the following year, apart from the line south of Matlock which survived with an infrequent service to and from Derby. The Peak Rail Preservation Society had high hopes of reopening all the way to Buxton but, so far, only a few miles north of Matlock to Rowsley South have been revived. The first section south from Darley Dale opened in 1991 but at first heritage trains were not allowed into Matlock BR station so Peak Rail opened Matlock Riverside, a short distance north, and this remained the terminus for 20 years until trains were allowed into Matlock itself. This saw the reconstruction of the NR station's former down platform in 2011. Matlock Riverside has been retained for 'special occasions' and is seen here from a Railway Touring Company excursion from Ealing Broadway through to Rowsley South, passing on 4th June 2017.
Finsbury Park: Stanier Coronation Class 4-6-2 no. 46233, 'Duchess of Sutherland', built at Crewe in 1938, seen here at Finsbury Park station with a Railway Touring Company excursion from Ealing Broadway to Peak Rail at Matlock, on 4th June 2017. This locomotive was withdrawn in 1964 and sold to Butlin's for display at their Ayr holday camp. In 1996, it was acquired by The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust and restored to working order in 2001 and 16 years later hauled this excursion train to Derby where 57314 took over to Rowsley South.
Matlock Bath: 168 years to the day since the line opened on 4th June 1849, Railway Touring Company return excursion from Rowsley South, current northern terminus of Peak Rail, to Ealing Broadway passes Matlock Bath station on 4th June 2017. Although the Derby to Matlock section of the former Midland Main Line was reprieved (and singled north of Ambergate) and despite Matlock Bath being a tourist spot in its own right, Barbara Castle, the then Labour Transport Minister, gave consent to close this intermediate station and it duly did so on 6th March 1967. However, this mistake was rectified when the station reopened on 27th May 1972, when she was no longer a minister. The station building is in a 'Swiss chalet' style in keeping with this part of Derbyshire's description as 'Little Switzerland' and is now owned by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust who restored the building as a cafe and visitor centre in 2019. Nearby is the Heights of Abraham cable car, opened in spring 1984, which rises 554 ft. in its 1864 ft. length.
Matlock Bath: Railway Touring Company return excursion from Rowsley South to Ealing Broadway, now back on National Rail metals, passing Matlock Bath station, looking back north, on 4th June 2017, 168 years to the day since this reprieved section of the former Midland Main Line from Derby to Manchester opened on 4th June 1849. Buried in undergrowth on the right but out of view are the remains of the former up platform, the line having been singled north of Ambergate with no passing loops between there and Matlock itself.

Stoke Bruerne: At first glance, this may seem to be purely a canal shot. But thanks to my brother, who sent me a slim publication which he found in a charity shop, I know that the stone surfaced area in the foreground was, from 1800 to 1805, a transhipment wharf from the canal on the left to a tramroad which passed over Blisworth canal tunnel while it was still under construction. It had two 4 foot gauge tracks and was powered by horses. View looks North.
Haydon Bridge: Just off the east end of the westbound platform at Haydon Bridge there is a former dead end loading dock set back from the current running lines and which also sat alongside lines running at the far side to serve the goods yard. Walton-on-the-Naze: The replacement ticket office at Walton-on-the-Naze, the Essex seaside terminus of the branch from Thorpe-le-Soken, seen here on the evening of 1st June 2021. On a previous visit, in September 2020, this was shut and the only staff were the driver and guard of the hourly train service and so it was on this latest visit too. Also, again on both occasions, nobody checked our tickets in either direction for the entire journey to and from Liverpool Street, must be down to covid, even though we were uncomfortably masked throughout the journeys.
