A garage fills the gap of what was the start of the northern portion of Clockmill Lane which ran to meet the other (existing) part at London Road after skirting St Margaret's shed. WK once bigger than EK but times have changed. The station building here is now a smart restaurant called Chu Chus and bistro-style soft jazz was drifting onto the warm platform until it was mercifully drowned out by this train of coal empties heading away from me north to Hunterston. Although the platform line is bi-directional the unelectrified line is the Up Freight only.

Triberg: A substantial information board outside Triberg station illustrates the dramatic sweep of the Schwarzwaldbahn (the black and white line) and the accompanying Erlebnispfad (discovery path) in red. This considerable feat of engineering, which proved to be a model for rail construction in other mountainous parts of the world, involved a distance of 11 km as the crow flies from Hornberg to St Georgen being extended to 26 km of track length - but with the outcome that no gradient is steeper than 1 in 50.

Mill Hill: A Colne to Blackpool South service calls at Mill Hill on 03 June 2017. Although the train has 4 carriages (a Class 150 and 142) the rear unit is locked out of service as far as Preston due to platform length at some stations on the line.
Summerseat: Immaculate Drewry Class 04 D2298, operating a train at the ELR Small Engines Gala, seen at Summerseat in June 2017. The inset picture shows the previous time I had seen the loco, at Dunnington on 6th January 1973, when it hauled a railtour to the Derwent Valley Light Ralway near York. The tour from Manchester ran along the DVLR in near darkness due to a loco failure near Wakefield. Sister loco DVLR No.2 (D2245) shared the haulage on the light railway section.
Summerseat: The ELR Small Engines weekend took place on 3rd/4th June 2017, coincidentally the 45th Anniversary of the last BR passenger train to Rawtenstall. Newly repainted 09024 runs through the woods near Summerseat on a short working from Bury to Ramsbottom.
Summerseat: GWR 0-6-0ST No.813, a guest at the East Lancashire Railway 2017 'Small Engines Gala', leaves Summerseat and drops back down towards Bury after taking a service to Rawtenstall on 3rd June.

Hausach: Seen at Hausach (the junction for Freudenstadt) on 3rd June 2017, the Class 146.2 loco of a southbound Schwarzwaldbahn train from Karlsruhe to Konstanz sports a livery promoting the panoramic viewpoints further south alongside this spectacular mountain railway. Completed in 1873, the line involves a height difference of no fewer than 670 metres between its lowest and highest points. Class 146.2s operate electric RE and IRE (Interregio-Express) trains across Baden-Wuerttemberg. [With thanks to Bill Jamieson for loco intelligence]

Shanghai Railway Museum: Shanghai Railway Museum. The museum, which opened in 2004, is largely contained in a replica of the main building of Shanghai North Station which was adjacent. Shanghai North Station was opened as Shanghai Station in 1909 and renamed in 1916. It was Shanghai's principal station for most of the 20th century until closure in 1987. It was replaced at that time by Shanghai Railway Station which is nearby and is still very much in use by both conventional and high speed trains. The site of the former Shanghai North Station terminal building is now the location of the extensive offices of the Shanghai Railway Administration. The former station tracks at Shanghai North now serve as the carriage sidings for Shanghai Railway Station. In addition Shanghai is served by the vast Hongqiao Station to the west of the city which is the principal high speed train station and also by the South Station from which conventional trains run to destinations in the south of China as well as high speed trains on the Jinshan Railway. 3 June 2017
Hornberg: Seen on 3rd June 2017, the panoramic viewpoint beside Hornberg station features detailed information boards on the history and geography of the Schwarzwaldbahn and its surroundings. Shouldn't Scotland be emulating this imaginative approach to promoting scenic railways?
Summerseat: In their all too brief BR lives the Class 14s only carried two-tone green livery but in preservation there has been a big variety. D9551, visiting the ELR 2017 Small Engines Weekend from the Severn Valley, sports Golden Ochre livery as originally carried by Western D1015. Seen here double heading with ELR resident D9531 on a train for Rawtenstall approaching Summerseat on 3rd June 2017.

The line could be regarded as a strategic first step to re-opening lines, noteably from Edinburgh to Galashiels, in the borders. Services will be half-hourly and run from Newcraighall to Edinburgh Waverley and Edinburgh Haymarket. The new service begins with ScotRail^s new summer timetable. The plant, which would be privately run by waste management firm Viridor, could handle more than twice as much waste as the council^s existing facility at Powderhall. The council^s plan to replace Powderhall is part of a joint project by the five Lothian and Borders councils. Dan Cooke, of Viridor Waste Management, said: "The facility will provide an integrated solution for household, industrial and commercial wastes. 2016 | ScotRail door control not an open-shut issue [Scotsman] | Have you ever noticed who controls the doors when you’re on a train? It may seem a small detail, but the issue has major significance for ScotRail – and has already affected thousands of passengers. This was the trigger for unofficial action which forced the cancellation of 80 trains last Sunday. More disruption is possible if the results of a strike ballot next Tuesday back walkouts. It centres on whether conductors or drivers should check that doors are clear and close them so the train can depart. If you travel on most ScotRail trains in and around Glasgow, it’s the driver – as it has been for 30 years. On almost all trains elsewhere, the job is done by a conductor. |
2017 | Southern trains ^to be cancelled without guard^ [BBC News] | Southern rail has confirmed trains will be cancelled on all lines apart from the Brighton mainline if a second member of staff is not onboard. Southern said it had made a temporary agreement with the drivers^ union Aslef while talks take place. He said the move was in return for Aslef suspending an overtime ban which had been due to begin on Sunday. During the year-long dispute Aslef has argued there should be a second ^safety-critical^ person on trains. The drivers^ union has been in the dispute with Southern and its parent company Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) over the roles of train staff. GTR replaced conductors with ^on-board supervisors^ to work across different services but without the responsibility of closing doors - which has switched to train drivers. |
