Clay Cross South Junction: Peak class 45 no D61 The Royal Army Ordnance Corps passes Clay Cross South Junction south of Chesterfield with a down express in July 1971. If the reporting number is correctly displayed, the destination must be Manchester Piccadilly and the train will be the 06.50 from St. Pancras. Although this started and finished its journey in the LMR, it traversed the ER for a short distance hence the 1M number.

Bill Jamieson 1975

Normanton: I'm not sure whether a class 40 pairing qualified as 'super power' but it was certainly super heavyweight! 40183 (leading) and 40123 are signalled onto the Wakefield Kirkgate line at Goose Hill Junction, Normanton, in July 1975. The train is the Bradford Forster Square - Manchester Red Bank newspaper empties, a regular double-headed working.

North Midland Railway
Bill Jamieson 1975

Normanton: 5M48 was that well known working, the Heaton to Manchester Red Bank newspaper empties, although in diesel days the motive power was a bit more mundane than the variety of double-headed steam which had taken it through the Pennines in earlier years. On 19 July 1975 'Peak' No. 45058 slows on the approach to Goose Hill Junction, Normanton, where it will cross over from the up fast onto the Calder Valley line.

Rothesay Pier: Pioneer, seen here alongside at Rothesay at 11.45 on 19-7-94, was quite distinctive - nothing else like her. She does have a port funnel as well, unlike some of today's bizarre designs! 'Pioneer' was an extra sailing - all she carried was a gas tanker which could not go by the timetabled ferry for safety reasons. As far as traceable, she became MV Brenda Corlett of Corlett Lines when sold by Calmac in 2004, and still operates in the Gulf of Guinea, West Africa. She is now 42 years old.

Greenock Central: A Gourock to Glasgow service in the shape of a Class 303 calls at Greenock Central in July 1998. In those days litter bins on platforms were deliberately conspicuous though this one was obviously treated as decoration. Stations are tidier now though whether that is down to better maintenance or a change in public attitude I am not qualified to say.

Directly behind the train locomotive is a dead 86221 BBC Look East, which had propelled the train 'under the wires' from London to Norwich with a DBSO leading. Note the drip trays between the bullhead rail on platform 2. This side of the station was once wired for the 1500v DC electric service to Sheffield Victoria which passed through Hadfield on the Woodhead route. Benneckenstein: Metre gauge 2-10-2T 99 7245 eases its train, the 14:36 departure from the Brocken to Nordhausen, into Benneckenstein on 19 July 2008. Photographed from the roof of the goods shed (only accessible for a brief period from scaffolding while David Spaven and myself were painting the outside of the adjacent station building), the engine shed features prominently on the right hand side. This brick built structure dating from the 1980s, had replaced an earlier half-timbered construction which went up in flames one night in June 1982 in an incident involving the then oil-fired 99 7232 and a well oiled fireman! At that time the shed was still in use for stabling one loco overnight but by the date of the photograph in 2008 it was only utilised for storing surplus locos.

Haggerston: 378144, on a southbound London Overground service, arriving at Haggerston on the evening of 19th July 2013. The incline up from Dalston Junction is more pronounced in this view. I can remember as a boy rattling up and down that on the old ramshackle 501 units when this was part of the Broad Street to Richmond line, once threatened by Beeching but reprieved although Broad Street itself closed in 1986. The original Haggerston station of 1867, closed in 1940 after heavy war damage, was just to the south and one of its platforms is still in evidence.

The fibreglass cab certainly looked more modern than the rounded Scarab; while the new vehicle featured such advanced technologies as servo assisted brakes and a built-in interior heater. Kinsale: Kinsale Station survives as a private dwelling and associated business premises despite closing in 1931. The branch from Kinsale Junction (latterly Crossbarry) opened in 1863. There were extensive facilities provided - with four tracks between the passenger platform to the right and the goods shed and loading bank to the left. Further to the left, and out of the picture, was a carriage siding and a further siding for loading cattle. An engine shed with a small turntable in front was provided at the Kinsale Junction end of the platform. It is not clear if remains of the shed and turntable survive, access into the private property not being possible.

Pendlebury: A Sprinter from Kirkby emerges from Pendlebury Tunnel to run through the site of the old Pendlebury station in July 2021. This closed after it partially collapsed in 1953, causing five fatalities in houses above that fell into it.

Clifton Junction [Manchester]: The cobbled approach road at Clifton (Junction) used to lead to a ticket office in the 'V' of a junction between the L&YR line from Bolton and the ELR from Bury. This location has passed into railway folklore as the scene of what became known as the 'Battle of Clifton Junction'. The National Transport Trust summarises the events as 'In 1849 Clifton Junction was the scene of a pitched battle between employees of the Lancashire & Yorkshire and East Lancashire Railways. The latter had running powers over the LYR from Clifton Junction into Manchester and was charged a rate according to the number of passengers carried. The LYR distrusted their competitor and insisted on checking the numbers. When the ELR ceased stopping at Clifton in order to avoid the control, the LYR placed obstacles across the track to force a stop. They also placed a train on the line in order to take those passengers who had a ticket. The ELR removed the obstacles and then had to push the LYR train out of the way, a task made harder by the LYR bringing up an extra locomotive. Meanwhile the ELR blocked the other line. After a physical struggle between locomotives the ELR won the day.' A TPE service for Edinburgh approaches the now almost forgotten station in July 2021.

Irlams o' th' Height: 158754, on a Northern service from Wigan North Western to Leeds on 19th July 2021, passes through the site of long closed Irlams o' th' Height station as it drops down towards Salford Crescent. The station was an island platform and the tracks still diverge around the site. The freight lines, removed in 1968, were on the other side of the surviving bridges, running at a slightly higher level at this point.

Pendlebury: This little green space alongside the main road in Pendlebury is actually the site of the station building. There is little to show what was here but there is a short section of yellow brick wall near the pavement and, backing on to the line, several more short sections of brick wall in different colours separating this now public area from the railway. When the station was open a footbridge from the back of the station building spanned two freight lines and the Down Passenger before stairs afforded access to the island platform in the deep cutting [[77296]]. Pendlebury is one of several Greater Manchester locations to be proposed for a reopened or new station.

Clifton Junction [Manchester]: 3-car 150001 passes Clifton on a Rochdale to Clitheroe service on 19th July 2021. Around twelve trains an hour pass through this Ghost station but the only ones to actually call here are the 0737 to Manchester and the 1801 to Bolton. Another railway passed under the platforms here, leaving the Bury to Clifton Junction line at nearby Molyneux Junction to make a link to Patricroft, but it closed as a through route in 1953.

Manchester, Bolton and Bury Railway
Mark Bartlett 2021

Irlams o' th' Height: Irlams o' th' Height station only lasted from 1901 to 1956, as it was well away from the village centre, although it was close to Agecroft engine shed. The surviving Atherton lines still divide around the site of the island platform, clearly visible from passing trains. The bricked up station entrance can still be seen between the two bridges in this July 2021 image. When two additional freight lines were added and the line quadrupled the new lines ran at a higher level through Irlams, as shown by the far abutment, but they came together properly before Pendlebury, and continued all the way to Dobbs Brow Junction until removal in 1968.
