Norwich: 40 years to the day since Mark Dufton recorded the scene from the platform end at Norwich see image [[45607]] it was difficult to try and see the similarities so much has changed. One of the few landmarks left is the bridge carrying Carrow Road over the railway in the centre distance, to the left of the DMU in the background of Mark's photo.
Dalmore Mill: View from the eastern portal of Auchendinny Tunnel on a September morning in 2017, heading for Hawthornden Junction along the route of the former Penicuik Railway. Photographed from near the location of the former signal box see image [[58665]].

Palmers Green: The delightful GNR style entrance to Palmers Green station, north London, on 27th September 2019. This station was opened in 1871 on the GNR's branch from Wood Green (now Alexandra Palace) to Enfield that was extended in the second decade of the 20th Century back to the main line at Stevenage to form the Hertford North Loop. It was electrified in November 1976.
See query 2166

White Hart Lane: The former east side entrance to White Hart Lane station, now closed and replaced by an enlarged and much improved ticket hall just to the south, on the London Overground Liverpool Street to Enfield Town/Cheshunt line, seen here on 27th September 2019. The new entrance opened on 26th August 2019 and, since taking this photo, this former entrance has been demolished. (See my photos, image nos. 1611 and 1615, for views of the new entrance.)
White Hart Lane: The brand new entrance, giving access to a much improved and larger ticket hall at White Hart Lane station, opened on 26th August 2019, seen here one month later. The station was originally opened by the Great Eastern Railway on 22nd July 1872 with the extension from Stoke Newington to a junction with the Enfield Town branch of 1849 at Lower Edmonton (now Edmonton Green). Lifts have also been installed giving step free access to and from the platforms at this station for the first time - but, surprise surprise, the one to the down platform (which I wanted to use) was 'out of order' on this day.
Silver Street: Silver Street station, in the Edmonton district of north London, looking south on 27th September 2019. This station was opened by the GER on 22nd July 1872 and has, with the line, been part of London Overground since 31st May 2015. Demolition by British Rail of the Victorian buildings on the down platform (right) have given the station a rather unfortunate lopsided appearance. The down platform now has the most paltry of waiting shelters, not even one of the ubiquitous bus stop style ones, and which offers little protection from the elements, especially when the rain slants down as it started to do while I was waiting there on this day.
White Hart Lane: New entrance, giving access to an enlarged and much improved ticket hall, at White Hart Lane station, north London, on 27th September 2019.
Silver Street: 315810, with a London Overground service to Liverpool Street, departing from Silver Street on 27th September 2019. The last Class 315 EMUs were withdrawn at the end of 2022, and all bar one have been scrapped.
Carron Water Bridge [East Croft of Carmont]: A September 2020 view of the recently completed works at the bridge over the Carron Water. I was actually expecting to see both sides of the bridge protected from river erosion but this is the finished wall.
Milnthorpe: On a surprisingly warm and sunny 27th September 2020, 195122 heads north at Elmsfield with a service from Preston for Windermere. At Oxenholme it had to wait in the down loop for the train from Windermere to clear the single track branch, and then made three round trips before heading south again for Manchester Airport.
Blackford: The 12.43 from Glasgow Queen Street to Dundee, powered by 43012 and 43146, passes the Highland Spring terminal at Blackford on 27th September 2020. No sidings laid yet.

Ayr: The new staff accommodation building on the east side of Ayr station, seen on 27th September 2020. This will provide staff with a fully functioning base, independent of the original station building. It will serve as a booking-on point for drivers and host general welfare facilities for all station-based staff. It has not taken Network Rail long to get this in place.
Newhaven Junction: Detail from the map of Edinburgh included in the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland (1886, my collection) prominently showing the railways of west Leith. Conspicuously missing is the 'Bangholm Junction' chord the book claims existed to connect the CR (east/west) and NBR lines, left of centre. See image [[74257]]
Gorebridge: A morning service to Tweedbank approaching Gorebridge from the north in September 2020.
Farleton Turnpike Bridge 156 [LC]: Looking north along the Lancaster Canal at Farleton Basin in September 2020, with an old stable block once used for packet boat horses on the left before the canal curves right towards Farleton Turnpike Bridge. The basin may once have been a hive of activity but this is a relatively short stretch of canal between two culverts and sees no boats now (other than the odd intrepid canoeist).
Ayr: 156495, on the 15.05 Sunday service to Stranraer, at Ayr on 27th September 2020.

Moy: In a horrendous downpour, 66091 is pictured hauling the RHTT at Moy, on the return working from Aviemore to Inverness, on 27th September 2022.
Coppull [2nd]: BR Standard Class 7MT pacific, 70000 'Britannia' runs northwards in the cutting at Charnock Richard, just to the north of Coppull, with Steam Dreams tour, 'The Lakes Express' on 27 September 2022. The tour started at London Victoria with West Country pacific 34046 'Braunton' working as far as Crewe. 'Britannia' then travelled via the S&C and using the Upperby curve accessed the WCML for a run to Oxenholme. This was the outward part of the tour and the return trip to London will be on Friday.
Lostock Hall: The last 'Pendle Dalesman' tour of the season travelling from Lancaster to Carlisle via the S&C was hauled by Merchant Navy class pacific 35018 'Briitish India Line'. The train is seen passing Lostock Hall on 27 September 2022.
Carlisle: 35018 'British India Line' lays over in Carlisle before returning south with the last 2022 'Pendle Dalesman' on 27th September. Looks like the weedkiller train needs to run through these sidings alongside the station.

It outlines Stephensons redesign of and budget for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, and became the blueprint for the railways that followed. |

2019 | DB begins testing of white-painted tracks to prevent overheating [Railway Technology] | German railway company Deutsche Bahn has started testing white-painted tracks to tackle the problem of overheating rails during heatwaves. The rail operator has painted 1km of the rail track between Hanover and Wrzburgs high-speed line with an environmentally friendly white paint. During the intense summers in Germany, the conventional rails absorb the heat, due to which the steel expands, causing stress on the rails and trackbed. With this solution, the white paint reflects the sun rays and reduces overheating and deformation of rails. |
2019 | First glass finish for Queen Street [Network Rail] | Engineers have completed work to install the 310 glass panels on Glasgow Queen Street stations new frontage. |
2019 | Platforms from polystyrene? Whod have thought it? [Rail Engineer] | MegaTech celebrates ten years of platforms with a difference Next time you are standing on a station, waiting for a train, look down. Not at your feet past those. Whats down there? On an older station it may be paving slabs, or tarmac. If its a newer platform, or a recent extension, it could be a fibreglass panel, or a concrete slab. |
2019 | Seven into Four does go - at Thickley Wood bridge [Rail Engineer] | Thickley Wood footbridge at Shildon, County Durham, is unusual but reflects the growth and decline of the local coalfields. Spanning the historic Stockton & Darlington Railway, this bridge dates from 1857, at which time it was a cast iron span of 16.5 metres over the Darlington to Bishop Auckland line. As the collieries expanded to meet the demands of Victorian Britains industries, so were additional sidings required. In 1868, a second wrought iron girder span of 10.9 metres was added to the south and, in 1875, four additional wrought iron lattice spans, one of 7.7 metres and three of 15.2 metres, were added to the south. At this time there were two running lines and six sidings passing below the bridge. |
