Feltham: One of the powerful Urie class H16 4-6-2 tanks photographed on Feltham shed in October 1959. Known as 'Green tanks', five were built in the early 1920s specifically to handle heavy cross-London interchange freight traffic emanating from Feltham marshalling yard. Opened in 1921, Feltham was the busiest yard in Britain at that time. All 5 of the H16s were withdrawn during 1962 and Feltham yard itself finally closed in January 1969.

Fraserburgh: The very last goods train at Fraserburgh on the 5th October 1979. Jim Morrison, one-time signalman at Fraserburgh, and latterly railwayman at Maud is pointing out something of interest to the driver of 27020. The location of the long since demolished signal box perhaps?

Palma: The low point, quite literally, of Majorcan Railways. This is Palma station in 1991, when the once extensive island network had been reduced to the tourist line to Soller and the 26km main line to Inca. The metre gauge diesel railcar on the left shuttled between Inca and Palma but other lines beyond Inca had been closed. The burnt out depot and railcar in the background summed it up really. Thankfully, since then, the line has been extended beyond Inca, electrified and also now terminates in an underground station in Palma connecting into the new Metro services. Soller services still run but from their own separate surface station.

Castlemaine [Victoria]: Castlemaine 'A' signal box on 5 October 2010. In the foreground is the Vicrail main line Melbourne - Bendigo, although the box controls only the Victorian Goldfields Railway which runs behind it. [Castlemaine is a similar arrangement to Aviemore - two main line platforms with the outer face of the island serving the preserved railway.]

Sheriffhall City Bypass Overbridge: Work continuing on the 'breached' section of the Edinburgh city bypass on Saturday 5 October 2013, with traffic passing the site using the temporary diversion to the north. Altogether a neat solution to a difficult problem, although I suspect the driver of the passing vehicle might see it as elementary.
Newark South Junction: Hawton Lane overbridge, Balderton, Newark, which crosses the long distance national cycle-path 64 running along the solum of the former line that ran from the north side of Melton Mowbray to the East Coast main line at Newark, passing thro' the former ironstone area of the country. Newark South Junction: View South of London Road skew overbridge, Balderton, Newark, on the former route running from the East Coast line at Newark to the north side of Melton Mowbray thro' the former ironstone area of the country, with connections to the Grantham to Nottingham line. The presence of the stream running through the arch on the right hand side suggests the line was single track.

Dunkeld and Birnam: An Edinburgh service pulls into Dunkeld on 05/10/2016. Gas lighting survived here until less than 40 years ago, but nothing has changed since, and probably for a lot longer. Dunkeld manages without departure information, a rarity nowadays but then it's all available by phone app. Who'd have thought of that in gas lighting days?
Perth: An Inverness to Glasgow service departs Perth with a honk for trackworkers ahead. This view gives a rather misleading picture of the station which in the main is unreconstructed Victorian (and all the better for it).
Perth: An Edinburgh service pulls out of the usual Platform 5 at Perth on 05/10/2016. This ironwork at this side of the station has not seen a paintbrush for decades. Just saying.

Standing alongside at platform 19 is CrossCountry Trains ultimate long distance service, the 0820 Aberdeen – Penzance.
Eastfield TMD: Grabshot from a passing train of the progress of the electrification work in early October 2017. The previous day there were dozens of contractor's staff in orange overalls working on the OHLE in the autumn sunshine.
Stirling: The 1915 station building (why does it have the date 1913 carved on it?) viewed from across what is now Goosecroft Road. Staion Road is out of frame to the right of this photo.
Edinburgh Waverley: 'On yer bike!' Exchange taking place on platform 11 at Waverley, seen here looking east from the cross station walkway on 5 October 2017. The train is the 1100 shuttle to Glasgow Queen Street, while alongside at platform 10 is the 1107 to Milngavie. Sleeper locomotive 92010 is stabled in the background.

Edinburgh Waverley: Scene at Waverley looking east from the cross-station walkway on 5 October 2017. The compound enclosing the works for the extended platforms 5 and 6 is now in place (complete with 'minder'). To the right is the rear end of the 1137 service to Milngavie standing alongside platform 11, while in the background, at the buffer stops beyond the east end of platform 10, is Serco Sleeper locomotive 92010.
Edinburgh Waverley: During 2017 work was carried out at the west end of Waverley in connection with the lengthening of platform 12 (see [[59963]]). The project involved the demolition of a substantial 2-storey building at the concourse end of the platform, seen here on 5 October 2017 with scaffolding and safety sheeting in place.
Edinburgh Waverley: A 158 boarding at the east end of platform 9 on 5 October 2017. On the left one of the massive piers supporting Edinburghs North Bridge is integrated within the stations south wall. Beyond the fence on the right is part of the station car park, with the two-tone blue of the 2006 IECC extension to the Edinburgh signalling centre in the background.
Maudlands Viaduct: OLE masts have now appeared on both sides of Maudlands Viaduct in Preston but not yet on the bridge itself. Northern 150210 approaches Fylde Junction with an eastbound service on 5th October 2017. This being a RMT strike day there were limited services to the Fylde Coast and this unit was shuttling between Blackpool North and Burnley Central. See image [[23385]] for the same location several years earlier.
Edinburgh Waverley: Mid-morning scene on the sub on a bright and sunny October day in 2017. The ScotRail 1103 service to Dunblane is boarding at the east end of platform 9.
Edinburgh Waverley: After many years of delays due to planning objections, design revisions, additional consultations, archaeological digs, a recession, etc, etc... work on Edinburgh's famous 'Waverley Valley' gap site is now well underway. View is west on 5 October 2017, with the Edinburgh Council HQ on the other side of New Street. In the right background, heading into Waverley platform 8 from the Calton Tunnel, is the 1029 ex-Tweedbank.
Edinburgh Waverley: A bright and sunny October morning at the east end of Waverley in 2017, with the 0926 ex-Helensburgh Central standing at platform 7, about to be passed by the 0700 from Kings Cross. The latter has just emerged from the Calton Tunnel and is heading for platform 11 via the southside crossover. Note the tracklifting underway in the short bays, which are soon to be extended to form platforms 5 and 6.
Garstang and Catterall: 88004 Pandora passes through the site of Garstang & Catterall station with the northbound 'Tesco' on 5th October 2018. The width of the original bridge, which carried the Knott End platform line, can be clearly seen. The stream in the foreground is culverted under the railway, and under the Lancaster Canal which is just behind the camera.
Blair Atholl: Panoramic view of Blair Atholl station, level crossing and signal box.
Base Station: The temporarily closed Base Station of the Cairngorm Mountain Railway on 5th October 2018.

Pitlochry: The structure of the new platforms at Pitlochry, prior to the surfacing being installed. This is the north end of the southbound platform. The site was previously occupied by a siding.
Pitlochry: Platform extensions, old style. The timber extension of the south end of the southbound platform is on an embankment See image [[34667]].
Drummuir: On the same day that our scheduled a trip to the top of Cairngorm didn't happen ... our charter on the Keith and Dufftown Railway had an unscheduled halt! 5th October 2018.
Pitlochry: View north at Pitlochry on 5th October 2018. There had been a goods shed to the right where the platform extension has been put in. The level crossing north of the station, by the signal box, can no longer be used following the extension of the platforms.
Blair Atholl: Blair Atholl forest, formerly sidings. There is still track underneath.
Dunkeld and Birnam: At the south end of Dunkeld station is this well known signal topped with a finial.
Hincaster Junction: Looking south at Hincaster Junction on 5th October 2018 as TPE 350410 heads for Glasgow. Prior to electrification this would have been a view of a 1914 LNWR signal box, controlling the junction for the Arnside line which diverged to the right at this point.
Dalwhinnie: A southbound train passes the distillery approaching Dalwhinnie station in evening light on 5th October 2018.
Dunkeld and Birnam: There has been no waiting room at Dunkeld for some time. This is on the platform side of the main building.
Forres: The new Forres station, looking towards Inverness. The station is very spacious, laid out with a large car park and room for expansion. The previous station is landscaped, now an area of grass.
Dalnaspidal: 66428 negotiates some reverse curves south of Dalnaspidal with a freight service from Inverness to Mossend on 5th October 2018.
Dalwhinnie: Exhaust heats the air over an HST power car paused at Dalwhinnie on 5th October 2018.

Pitlochry: Pitlochry box looks somewhat unusual from this rear view. The box is category 'A' listed.
Blair Atholl: A southbound service draws to a halt at Blair Atholl. The yard to the left is now extremely overgrown. Does the locomotive shed still stand?
Dunkeld and Birnam: Category 'B' listed Dunkeld box and, to the right, ground preparations for its replacement.
Pitlochry: North end of Pitlochry station looking south over the new platform extensions.
Grantown-on-Spey West: The site of Grantown-on-Spey West station is cleared and absorbed into an industrial estate. However a railway cottage remains and this long loading bank at the west end.

Pitlochry: View south from the Pitlochry footbridge.
Hincaster Junction: An Edinburgh bound Pendolino speeds past Hincaster Junction on 5th October 2018. The buildings on the left were originally used for transferring traffic from the nearby Sedgwick Gunpowder Works onto railway wagons but rail traffic ceased around 1963.
Brondesbury: If the entrance to Brondesbury station is uninspiring, the platforms are even less so, as seen in this view looking east on 5th October 2019. This is one of the original stations of the Hampstead Junction Railway, opened with the line on 2nd January 1860 and it went through several name changes in its first 23 years. Edgware Road (Kilburn) on opening became simply Edgware Road on 1st October 1865. In 1872, it was further renamed Edgware Road & Brondesbury but still this did not satisfy the LNWR Directors and in 1873 it became Brondesbury (Edgware Road). Edgware Road was finally dropped altogether when, on 1st May 1883, it became simply Brondesbury and has remained so to the present day. This was once part of the Broad Street to Richmond Line, infamously listed for closure in the 1963 Beeching Report but was eventually saved and since becoming part of London Overground in 2007, it now carries far more passengers than it ever did.
Kings Cross: The new western concourse at London Kings Cross station, opened in March 2012 and built onto the side of Lewis Cubitt's 1852 terminus, seen here on the afternoon of Saturday, 5th October 2019.
West Hampstead: West Hampstead station, LUL Jubilee Line, looking north with a train of 1996 stock on a service to Stanmore on the left, on 5th October 2019. This station was opened by the Metropolitan Extension Railway in 1879 and rebuilt in 1939 for the transfer of services to the Bakerloo Line which were subsequently transferred to the Jubilee Line in 1979. Metropolitan Line trains run fast between Finchley Road and Wembley Park, passing West Hampstead while on the south-west side of the station, adjacent to the down Metropolitan track are the up and down tracks for Chiltern Line services to and from London Marylebone which likewise do not stop here.
Brondesbury: A short distance south of the LUL Jubilee Line station at Kilburn along Edgware Road, is the rather uninspiring entrance to the London Overground station at Brondesbury, seen here on the 5th October 2019. Edgware Road here is part of Kilburn High Road, along which centurions would have trudged as it follows the line of the Roman Watling Street.
Brock: 66148 'Maritime Intermodal Seven' runs south past the Highways England depot at Brock, with a Carlisle New Yard to Basford Hall infrastructure train on 5th October 2020. The blue Maritime livery makes a change from the usual DB red scheme.
Calder Aqueduct [LC]: Bridge 52 on the Lancaster Canal is the Calder Aqueduct. Because they are on virtually the same level, rather than a clear arch the Calder passes under the canal in a siphon.
