'Vega' and her sister 'Sagittaire' (P743) had arrived at Troon under tow of the Frank Pierce tug, 'Pullwell Lima', 22 April, 1982 (other sources quote 01 April as the arrival date for both vessels) and they lay at the East Pier for several months before breaking started as there were other vessels being dealt with first.

2007 | Tramcar on track to return to city [Evening News] | One of the last remaining trams to run on the streets of Edinburgh could soon be on its way back to the capital. Tramcar 35 - the last example of the city^s old tram fleet - has been on loan to the National Tramway Museum at Crich, Derbyshire, since the late 1980s. Council officials recently recommended letting it stay there as a gift because it was felt it would be too expensive to bring the vehicle back and house it in Edinburgh. But a group of tram enthusiasts have approached the council claiming private backers are ready to put up the cash to return and restore it. They would also fund the creation of an exhibition space for the vehicle, possibly along the route of the city^s new trams. |

2008 | Historic milepost displayed at Queen Street [First ScotRail] | When the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway opened in 1842, distances were indicated by distinctive cast-iron mileposts derived from turnpike practice which showed the miles to Queen Street and Haymarket, eastern terminus until 1846. Milepost 5 at Cadder has been restored in situ by First Engineering (now part of Babcock Rail), but the remaining four survivors are being taken into safe keeping by Network Rail for possible future display at museums or other appropriate locations. When First ScotRail heard that the Railway Heritage Committee wished a milepost to be placed at one of the stations on the route, we were delighted to be able to accommodate at Queen Street a sixth survivor. This is Milepost 14, formerly at Dullatur which Network Rail had in store and have now restored for permanent display at the end of Platforms 2 and 3. A plaque to mark the arrival of the milepost at Queen Street was unveiled today by Peter Ovenstone, chairman of the Scottish Subcommittee of the Railway Heritage Committee who is seen in this photo (by Chris Dixon) flanked by Subcommittee members Bob Gardiner, Network Rail Track Engineer and John Yellowlees, First ScotRail External Relations Manager. |
2008 | £5m upgrade for Gourock set to go ahead [Modern Railways] | A £5m redevelopment of Gourock station is set to go ahead after years of false starts. A modern station, improved customer information systems and a walkway to the ferry terminal are just some of the benefits. Transport Scotland and Inverclyde council have accepted NR proposals for a station upgrade, including stabilisation of the sea wall and platforms. |

2012 | ‘It’s the perfect house but I just can’t sell it’: Homeowner who keeps four railway engines in garden amazed he can’t find a buyer for knock-down semi [Mail] | It has two bedrooms, a large garden and would be every inch the perfect family home - if it didn’t have four railway engines parked on the back lawn. The semi-detached home, in a quiet cul-de-sac, is available for the knock-down price of £74,500 as owner Mel Thorley desperately seeks a buyer. Mr Thorley says he has been left with steam coming out of his ears by the number of people who have come to view the property - only to make tracks as soon as they see the locomotives. |
2012 | Work on Kemble to Swindon railway line starts [BBC News] | Preparation work to redouble the Kemble to Swindon railway line has begun. Despite concerns it would fall victim to government spending cuts, the £45m project was approved in March 2011 [From Richard Buckby] |
2013 | End of the line for direct trains to Glasgow? [Carrick Gazette] | Fifty years on from the closure of the original railway through Galloway in 1965 the new ScotRail franchise could herald the end of through trains from Stranraer and Girvan to Glasgow. The move comes as Transport Scotland issued its Invitation to Tender Document to the five bidders for the new ScotRail franchise due to start on April 1st 2015. Now Scotland’s transport agency is inviting bidders to consider ending direct links to the Central Belt obligating passengers to change trains at Ayr or Kilmarnock and wait up to 15 minutes for a connection. One of Scotland’s coldest stations, Ayr possesses no step free access between platform 4 and the rest of the station. Chair of SAYLSA John McCutcheon said “First we saw the abstraction of 60,000 ferry passengers, now we see the potential ending of through rail journeys, I hope the next stage is not the end of rail services to Stranraer completely.” Whilst it is a prerequisite of such a bid that more trains must be provided than the current six between Stranraer and Girvan and 15 between Girvan and Ayr nevertheless it is hard to see how such a move would encourage people to travel. Faced with changing trains and high fares it is hardly a recipe for economic growth. |
2015 | Glasgow Airport tram-train link proposed [IRJ] | GLASGOW City Council announced on November 26 that it is looking to develop a tram-train link to connect Glasgow city centre and Paisley with Glasgow Airport, which could be operational within a decade. The project is included in the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal, which will devolve £1bn in British Scottish government funding to the city and surrounding region for investment in transport and regeneration. The City Deal will also enable local authorities to borrow up to £130m for capital investment. [From Richard Buckby] |
2015 | Inverkeithing to Perth rail route safeguarded [Transform Scotland] | Transform Scotland^s press release: ^ Transform Scotland^s Inter-City Express Campaign aims to see investment in the railway between the Central Belt of Scotland and Inverness brought up to the level being spent on roads (£6bn on the A9 and A96 upgrades). We are looking for a major investment programme to bring the railway up to 21st century standard by dualling the track, electrification and other enhancements. ^An important element of our proposal is the re-opening of the line between Inverkeithing and Perth, which would give a reduction in journey time of at least 30 minutes to Perth and beyond. We have therefore been pressing for the safeguarding of remaining track and infrastructure from non-rail development which would inevitably lead to increased costs when the line is reconstructed.^ |
2017 | Play stations: Railway stops worth lingering at [BBC News] | The golden age of rail travel appears to be well and truly over, and stations lack the glamour formerly associated with letting the train take the strain. Often unmanned and usually unloved, they are places to hurry through. Commuters on the daily grind tend to be grimly determined when leaving a train. Heads down, elbows out, it^s a fight to get to the exit. The only reason to pause is to grab a cardboard cup of something caffeinated before stalking out into the ice-spiked drizzle of a dark winter^s morning. But what if your station wasn^t full of faceless coffee chains and people pushing? What if there was a station garden filled with fragrant shrubs, or an art gallery, or a top-notch local restaurant? |
2017 | A first class bargain! Converted 19th century railway station goes on sale [Daily Mail] | A 19th century railway station that was converted into a family home has gone on sale for £380,000. The old Innerpeffray Station house, on a disused railway line near Crieff, Perthshire, is on the market nearly 70 years after closing its doors to the public. |
2018 | ScotRail blasted by MSPs and union over worst performance levels in more than a decade [Daily Record] | Under-fire ScotRail have hit their worst performance levels since Dutch firm Abellio took over running the franchise. The latest figures the poorest in more than a decade show one in five services failed to arrive on time. At the two worst-performing stations, Largs and Milngavie, three-quarters of trains were late. Under the franchise agreement, on time is defined as being less than five minutes late. Passengers we spoke to described the reliability of services as a joke. |
2018 | Edinburgh tram staff vote to strike during festive period [BBC News] | Tram workers in Edinburgh have voted to strike during the festive period, amid union claims of bullying by bosses. Almost 70% of Unite members in the ballot favoured industrial action.
