Hopetown Carriage Works

Southwest of Darlington's North Road station, across what was once the scrapyard of Darlington Works and is now an empty field, stands the old Hopetown Carriage Works. The building was opened in 1853 as a workshop of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and has seen many occupants over the past 150+ years. Part of the central section was used after World War 2 by A H Peppercorn, last CME of the LNER, while more recently the NELPG has used the northern section for locomotives undergoing heavy maintenance and repair. The southern section was in the news recently as the works in which 60163 Tornado was built by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. Photographed on 4 October 2008.
