On the east side of the Ulverston Canal, for almost its entire length, is a large drainage ditch. All along the ditch are these closely spaced wooden struts sitting in the water with beams forming the channel on either side. I can only assume they are intended to protect against the canal banking slipping and breaching but am open to other suggestions. This view along the canal path towards Ulverston Canal Head, with the Sir John Barrow Monument on Hoad Hill prominent on the right.
