Ulverston Canal Rolling Bridge

This is the view towards the operational railway bridge from the now disused Rolling Bridge, which is near to the mid point on the 1.25 mile Ulverston Canal. From here to near the canal head a railway line, known as the Canal Branch, served mills and wharves on the west side of the waterway. The branch was accessed from a junction immediately south west of the rolling bridge and controlled by a signal box known as 'Ulverston Canal'. The box closed in 1952 but the canal branch could still be accessed by a ground frame until it closed in 1966. This left just chemical works traffic to Glaxo, which survived until 1994.
