Bredbury: The lines around Bredbury in the 1950s. Top left to bottom right is the surviving Manchester to Sheffield route, although express trains now run via Stockport. North from Romiley is the Hyde Loop, served by Rose Hill trains. Branching from Woodley was the link to Godley Junction on the Woodhead route, now a public greenway. South west from Woodley was the line through Stockport Tiviot Dale, also linked from Romiley but closed and lifted after the Woodhead route. A stub to the Bredbury stone (A) and waste (B) terminals remains in use in 2024. Added by Mark Bartlett. Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland http://maps.nls.uk/index.html.
Bredbury Waste Terminal: With the closure of the Woodhead route in 1981, the link line from Godley Junction to Woodley also closed, as did the line from Woodley on through Stockport to the Lymm line. Most of the route was lifted but a short section from Woodley was retained and serves a waste transfer station and a stone terminal at Bredbury, which were both opened in 1986 and see regular traffic in 2024. This view from a public footbridge looks towards Stockport and shows the run round loop for the stone terminal, which is beyond the bridge, and the link into Bredbury Waste Terminal, which has its own run round loop.
Newcastle Central: A3 (probably 60092, Fairway) on up Queen of Scots departing Newcastle in 1962.
Godley: 323226 calls at Godley with a Manchester bound service on 30th October 2024. This basic station opened in 1986, to a similar design to Flowery Field. Although the platforms are high above the road it is still much better sited for residents than the original Godley Junction, one third of a mile east of here, that it replaced.
Fort William: Black 5 (4)5305 'Alderman A E Draper' about to leave Fort William for Mallaig with the 'West Highlander' on 18th August 1997.
Charing: Interior of ticket office at Charing station, Kent, on the Maidstone East line, dating from 1884, at 10.45 on Monday, 11th November 2024. Standing in the platform is The Railway Touring Company's Armistice Day excursion from London Victoria to Canterbury West, behind Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 no. 44871 (1945), during a water stop. A two minutes silence was observed on board at 11.00 before moving on at 11.02.
Niddrie North Junction [Lothian Lines]: Niddrie North signal box looking south in a shot thought to date from 1972. The trackbed to the left was the connection to Wanton Walls and the ECML with a spur going off to the right before the occupation bridge to join the Waverley route at Niddrie South .Not visible in the shot is the connection from Niddrie West coming in from the right. This arrangement was opened by the NBR in 1915 allowed traffic to reach Leith Docks by avoiding Portobello East Junction. The visible track is the Waverley Route heading to Millerhill Yard and the, by then, singled, curve to Niddrie West. To the right of the SB are a chimney of Newcraighall Colliery and in the hazy distance the top of one of the winding towers at Monktonhall Colliery.
Percy Main Shed: 28 May 1964 sees J27 0-6-0 No 65809 at Percy Main Shed, as one of the several located there at this time.
Comrie: This probably isn't a platform or loading bank. The former Comrie line is the mud road in this view. The line crossed over the Milton Burn directly east of Invermilton. A couple of sleepers lie by the former trackbed. This was the location of the down distant for Comrie station.
Eastfield MPD: 20119, on shed at Eastfield Glasgow, in July 1984. This was its home depot for a number of years.
