Perth New Yard: On a lovely sunny April day, 170412 passes the site of Perth New Yard with the 12.07 Glasgow QS - Inverness. For a 2009 view of the same location see image [[22580]].
Penshaw [2nd]: Crime scene: looking SSW from the site of the second Penshaw station, this is the North end of the section where 2 miles of track were stolen, dismantled, and sold for scrap in 2003. The ringleader even set up a company to allow him to hire equipment without arousing suspicion. Ten for initiative; zero for honesty. The gang was rumbled because they were wearing Jarvis jackets; a passing Jarvis employee rang his boss to ask whether they had a contract on the Leamside line; having established that they did not, he tipped off the police.
Alnwick (Lionheart): Walking between Alnmouth and Alnwick it was a pleasant surprise to see 144004 passing, possibly driver training or driver experience. The Aln Valley Railway also has a 3-car set, 144016.
Torrington: 25161 and 25224 worked the Battle of Britain Society's special Atlantic Coast Express to Torrington on 17th May 1975. The Type 2s are seen running round the train. Note the milk tanker on the left. Torrington dispatched milk to London, which connected at Exeter Riverside in the evening to the St Erth to Acton service 6A21.
Bamber Bridge: The signaller at Preston PSB was yet to clear the road for the Colne service, approaching the station from the west, as Northern 195131 passed underneath the unusual structure holding up Bamber Bridge Signal Box. This was 1B23, 1023 York to Blackpool North on 9th April 2025. The signal box controls the level crossing on the main road at Bamber Bridge and were it not for the busy nature of the road these duties would have surely been passed to the Power Signal Box just a handful of miles away.
Lisvane and Thornhill: 142085 is approaching Lisvane and Thornhill station, with a service from Rhymney or Bargoed for Cardiff, in August 1999. The road bridge behind carries the M4 over the railway.
Huntingtower Branch Ground Frame: View east where the private Huntingtower Bleachfield siding took off to the north east (curving off to the left) and the 'main line' continued straight ahead. The lines have been ploughed out here. The bleachfield branch also served Pitcairnfield Bleach Works and would later have a tight curve off to the left for the Royal Naval Store Depot Almondbank. The bleachfield branch, opened in 1911, had a 500v DC system using overhead wires. The Naval Store dated from the Second World War and a small exchange yard laid out on the private line. The modern gate roughly equates to the site of the wooden gate which formerly closed across the private siding when not in use. Sandwiched between it and the line was the distant signal for Huntingtower Siding, a little to the east.
Hatton [B and OR]: Hatton station around 1960 with a newish Swindon (later Class 120) DMU calling.
