Aberdeen's harbour lies on its east side. The harbour was built around the entry of the River Dee into the sea.
The harbour remains busy, very much associated with the oil industry in the north sea and with ferries to Lerwick and Kirkwall.
Docks include:
- Aberdeen Victoria Dock 1848 (north west)
- Aberdeen Albert Basin 1869 (centre west)
- River Dee quaysides (south west)
- Tidal Harbour (east)
The Aberdeen Harbour Commissioners was incorporated in 1895. Shunting within the docks was by horses until 1915 when the Great North of Scotland Railway took over at the instigation of the Admiralty.
