Description

This is a two platform station with the main station building on the northbound platform. The original shelter on this platform was similar to that at Killin [2nd] reflecting the size of Cumbernauld before it became a 'New Town'. To the immediate west of the building was a stone built cottage. There was a small goods yard at the north end of the eastbound platform and, north of this, a loop off the line.

There was a signal box at the north end of the station, on the east side, opposite a turnback siding from the south on the west side of the line. The box closed in 1999.

The station was originally some distance south of Cumbernauld Village, around a mile and a half to the north. The bridge over the line at the south end of the station was a realignment of the older road to accommodate the railway. The bridge was removed for electrification.

The lines to Cumbernauld from Sighthill Junction, Springburn, to Cumbernauld via Gartcosh and from Gartsherrie South Junction to Garnqueen North Junction were electrified in early 2014.

Electrification opened up the possibilities of new routes and in addition to the Glasgow Queen Street High Level via Gartcosh service, other services were introduced to Milngavie or Dalmuir via Hamilton and Dalmarnock, and Dumbarton Central via Springburn (reverse)) and Yoker.
