Dubton

Location type

Station

Name and dates

Dubton (1850-1952)

Opened on the Aberdeen Railway.

Description

This station was the junction between the main line of the Aberdeen Railway and its branch to Montrose [CR].

This was a three platform station, two mainline platforms, the southbound platform being an island with a second face to the south for the Montrose [CR] branch. The main station building was on the northbound platform with a large waiting room with canopies on the island platform.

There were sidings to the west, on the north side and approached from the east, and to the south, approached from the west.

The junction between the main line and branch was east of the station. The branch was crossed by the North British, Arbroath and Montrose Railway when it opened nearby in 1881.

Also in 1881 a north and south box opened at Dubton station. The south box was on the south side of the line west of the station. The north box was at the east end of the island platform.

The station closed to passengers in 1952. In 1963 the Montrose [CR] branch closed and the south box closed. The north box survived for another year. The Strathmore main line survived until 1967 after which Dubton was on the goods only line from Kinnaber Junction to Brechin. The line was reduced to a single track. It closed in 1981.

The track here was lifted when the Brechin branch was closed to freight by British Rail. The station buildings remain but the platforms have been filled in. The main station building is now in use as a house. The secondary building on the island platform remains, disused. The trackbed east to Kinnaber Junction has been removed where it ran through the village of Hillside. In recent years the curve to Montrose has been ploughed out for about a quarter of a mile.

A bridge to the west where the line passes under the A935 is interesting in having ribs underneath the arch, as do most bridges on the line in this area.
