This engine, of 20hp, was at the north end of the Law Incline and immediately south of the Law Tunnel. The engine was on the west side of the line and entrance to the tunnel. There was little development here while open, on the modern road system it was immediately south of Kinghorn Road (formerly Hospital Wynd) and west of Upper Constitution Street.
As the lines exited the tunnel, there were two level sidings on the east side and between those and the engine house was the top of the incline running downhill to Dundee Ward Road. On this section, there were three rails running south, the middle rail being shared between the up and down directions. A short siding served the engine and boiler house building.
The side was also a station known as 'Top of Law' from the opening of the line on 16 December 1831. It was the southern terminus of the line until it was extended to Dundee Ward Road down the incline. Its opening in 1831 was announced as from "The Engine House at the Law of Dundee" to "The Engine House at Hatton Mill, near Newtyle". At that time horses were used on the level sections and an engine house was in operation at Balbeuchly. As a station it was open until around 1846 and possibly later.
The Dundee Ward Road, Law Tunnel, Law Incline, Law Incline Engine and the line to [Downfield Junction] closed in 1861 when replaced by the Lochee Deviation which ran between Ninewells Junction and [Downfield Junction] . Dundee West was now the Dundee terminus via the deviation.
The location is now housing.
