The Dundee and Newtyle Railway's workshops were located at Offset at Back of Law, loops on either side of the line and sidings at the north end of the Law Tunnel and directly east of Lawton. The works were at the southern end of the railway's 'Southern Level', north of the Law Tunnel and the Law Incline. Once the line was locomotive operated this was a good location to have the works, not on an incline unsuitable for locomotive use but at one end of a long level section and close to the city and port of Dundee. The line was level going north from here to the Balbeuchley Incline about 3.5 miles distant.
Offset at Back of Law (offset meaning siding) was probably a halt here for the works, opened around 1833.
1842 Plan, The Dundee and Newtyle Railway including The Alyth and Blairgowrie Branches, Niall Ferguson, pp 38
This shows the single track railway dividing into three lines, with a siding leading off one of the loops which then further subdivided into three sidings; two running into a Engine Shop and Smith's Shop building, and another to a Wright's Shop.
1857 Ordnance Survey Map
This shows the single track railway divided into three lines north of the Law Tunnel; a central road, a loop to the west and a loop to the east. A siding from the south end of the east loop ran south to a Turntable (a turnplate serving a building to the east) before subdividing into two lines which ran into a shed building. One of the lines continued south of the shed past a Coal Depot (coal bench?) to rejoin the line south of the loops and immediately north of the tunnel.
Closure
It was decided that these were to be replaced, after the operation of the line was taken over by the Dundee and Perth Railway in 1846, by new joint workshops at Seabraes by the Dundee terminus of the D&PR.
After closure the site became the Rockwell Works (Flax).
