This is a two platform station. The station is a modern re-opening on the site of the original station, slightly to its south.
The original station was also a two platform station. The main building was on the northbound platform, a simple timber building. There was a waiting room with a single sloping roof on the southbound platform.
South of the station there were loading banks on either side of the station, both reached by reversal.
The signal box was at the south end of the northbound platform, alongside the main building.
The original station closed in 1956 and the box in 1967. The new station opened in 1985.
When the first station opened Portlethen was a small village to the south east, about 2/3 of a mile away. This is now known as Portlethen and there has been much development of what was farmland to create the new Portlethen, largely to the west of the station.
