Description
This is an important large five platform station located where a number of long distance lines meet. The station is on the north bank of the River Severn and north east of the town centre. There are three through platforms (nos 3, 4, 7) on the lines to the north and an additional two bay platforms at the south end (nos 5, 6). The Tudor-styled station building was by Thomas Mainwaring Penson.
To the north lines divide running
- north west to Chester via Wrexham
- north to Crewe via Whitchurch.
At the south end is a triangular junction with lines running
- west to Aberystwyth and the Welsh Coast
- south via Abergavenny to Newport and South Wales (and the Central Wales Railway to Llanelli)
- east to Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street

Largest lever frameNotable at the south end of the station is Severn Bridge Junction signal box which is the largest remaining in use lever frame box in Britain. The box is located at the northern apex of the triangular junction. (The western junction is English Bridge Junction and eastern Abbey Foregate Junction.) |
