This hotel was built for the Glasgow and South Western Railway in 1897. It stands to the west of Dumfries station, across Station Road. It is a three storeys with basement and attic building built in sandstone. The building has several striking features: a entry porch, projecting first floor room, dormer windows, tower topped with cupola and an unusual octagonal east side extension at ground floor and basement levels.
The architect was William Johnstone Milwain.
This hotel belonged, latterly, to British Transport Hotels. It was sold in 1972.
