The future of direct daytime train services between Inverness and London is still up for debate, according to Scottish transport minister Keith Brown in an exclusive interview with The Inverness Courier. Cross-border Caledonian Sleeper train services were secured earlier this week when the Scottish government announced it would more than match the £50 million of investment from the UK government for the service. But a question mark remains over the daytime Highland Chieftain service in a consultation document published by Transport Scotland about the future of Scotland’s rail services after 2014. It suggests is passengers using cross-border services might be forced to change trains in Edinburgh an option which has provoked huge opposition. [From Richard Buckby]
