Caledonian Sleeper is on track to be Scotland's Orient Express [Herald]

OPERATORS bidding for the new Caledonian Sleeper rail franchise will be encouraged to transform it into an international tourist attraction on a par with famous overnight trains such as the Orient Express. Passengers boarding at London Euston should feel they are stepping into Scotland as soon as they enter the revamped train, with everything from the food to the decor being 'emblematic of the very best of Scotland'. The challenge was made as government agency Transport Scotland set out the minimum requirements it expected the successful bidder to deliver in exchange for more than £50 million of public money.

Green liveried 47522 Doncaster Enterprise, takes the Euston-Inverness Sleeper north through the Dunblane Laighills at 5.30 a.m. one morning in June 1988. This was a long and heavy train, carrying cargo such as newspapers as well as sleeping passengers. To obtain a similar photo today of the much shorter and faster Caledonian Sleeper, one would need to knock on someone's door and ask to stand in their kitchen at 5.15 a.m!

Scene at Carstairs at 6.25am on a pleasant Tuesday morning in the Summer of 2006. The 16 coach Caledonian Sleeper from Euston arrived 11 minutes earlier behind EWS 90022. The train has been split and 90022 is about to continue its journey to Glasgow Central with what is now an 8 coach train. Meantime 37405 has been coupled up to the other end and is preparing to depart with the rear 8 coaches for Edinburgh Waverley.
