The 112-mile-long London & Birmingham Railway (L&BR), engineered by Robert Stephenson, was the first inter-city line to be built into London. The Parliamentary Act authorising its construction was passed on 6 May 1833. At Birmingham it was to connect with the 82 miles Grand Junction Railway (GJR), authorised on the same day.

HS2 Ltd confirmed on May 10 that it had selected a consortium of Mace and Dragados to build the station at Birmingham Curzon Street under a contract worth £570m.

HS2 and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) have agreed to work together to deliver the utility diversions required to enable the planned Birmingham Eastside extension to serve the new HS2 Curzon Street Station on its proposed route to Digbeth.

UK: Birmingham City Council granted planning permission for the Curzon Street High Speed 2 station on April 23. Invitations to tender for the construction contract are to be issued this summer.
The councils report said the design developed by project promoter HS2 Ltd with WSP and Grimshaw Architects was truly world class, and the elegant and (deceptively) simple form of the main station building clearly reads as a railway station and harks back to traditional station architecture, delivering this in a confident and contemporary way. Plans for a £200m extension to the Midland Metro light rail system from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill have been handed to Britain's secretary of state for transport, Mr Chris Grayling.
The business case for the 11.2km extension was presented by the mayor of the West Midlands, Mr Andy Street, and Ms Laura Shoaf, managing director of Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), at the House of Commons. The line will run from Wednesbury, on the existing Birmingham - Wolverhampton route, to Brierley Hill, serving Great Bridge, Horseley Heath, Dudley Port, Dudley town centre, the Waterfront and Merry Hill. This extension is part of a larger plan to extend the system, which also includes a proposed extension to Wolverhampton interchange and the planned HS2 terminal at Curzon Street in Birmingham. The headquarters for construction of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail line is to be based in Birmingham.
HS2 Ltd, the company responsible for the project, said its new premises would house up to 1,500 staff. It is expected to include engineers and designers responsible for track, signalling and station plans, as well as support staff. While some jobs would move from London, the company said, many would be new roles.
