Calls are being made for Scotland's next First Minister to support a campaign to re-open Cumnock and Mauchline's railway stations. MSP Sharon Dowey wants the new leader to support plans to bring the stations back to life, following their closures in 1965, after opening in the 1800s.

The nationalisation of ScotRail could throw plans for new stations at Cumnock and Mauchline into jeopardy, according to MSP Sharon Dowey.
It comes as Ms Dowey has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport Michael Matheson MSP following news that 30 per cent of Scotlands rail services are to be cut temporarily. Research has shown that Mauchline station could serve over 120,000 people per year, while Cumnock could service 200,000. The call comes from South Scotland Conservative List MSP, Sharon Dowey, who claims the Scottish Government should make it one of their top priorities.

Cumnock and Mauchline have been included in proposals to expand Scotland's rail network with the creation of 51 new stations. [As with many of the stations on the list, Ardrossan North would not be a re-opening but an entirely new station on an existing railway. The former Ardrossan North was on the closed Caledonian route. -RS]

Engineers say they are 'confident' the rail line through Ayrshire will reopen on Monday after work to remove derailed wagons was completed.
Two trains carrying ballast for engineering work collided on the track at Logan, near Cumnock, two weeks ago. Network Rail said a 130-tonne locomotive engine and 16 wagons were moved from the site by Friday. Engineers are now working 'round-the-clock' to repair the damaged track in time to reopen the line. Before lifting the engine and wagons, engineers had to first construct a 350m-long haul road, and operating pad, for the 1,000-tonne crane which was required to remove the wagons and the locomotive. Rail travel between Glasgow and Dumfries could be disrupted for two weeks after a crash between two trains during engineering work at the weekend.
The track was damaged at Logan, just east of Cumnock in Ayrshire, when the trains carrying ballast collided and wagons were derailed on Saturday. Scotrail said a replacement bus service would be running between Dumfries and Kilmarnock. Network Rail said it could take 10 days to move the derailed wagons. It will also take about three days to repair the damaged track after the wagons are removed. (Permalink) Crash Cumnock Derailment Logan ScotRail |
