It is 50-50 as to whether Edinburghs Southern Suburban Railway could be reopened to passenger traffic, the citys transport convener has said.

It's 60 years ago today since the last regular passenger train made its final journey on Edinburgh's South Suburban railway. The line - which runs in a circle from Waverley through Haymarket to Gorgie, Craiglockhart, Morningside, Blackford Hill, Newington, Duddingston/Craigmillar, Portobello, Piershill and Abbeyhill - is now only used for freight and diverted services, but there have been repeated calls for it to be reopened and a feasibility study on its future is included in the public transport plan being prepared by the current council administration. Now rail expert Robert Drysdale, who has been researching the history of the 'South Sub', has detailed the intriguing story of how one of Scotlands better-used lines, whose full potential was never exploited, came to be closed.

With works down on the Newhaven line extension still in progress, officials are set to put forward the proposals, which would see the tram operate on a north-south tram line.

Edinburgh South Suburban Railway is a campaign group run mostly on Twitter and which has one aim to reopen the railway line to passengers within the city, taking cars off the streets and providing another means of public transport.
The group would like you to support their cause by responding to the online consultation on the Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2) for Scotland which ends at midnight on 15 April 2022. A petition to reopen a historic route [which partly incorporates] the [former] Edinburgh, Suburban and Southside Junction Railway has gained thousands of signatures as it aims to increase mobility and city centre links for Edinburgh residents.

A recent survey of Edinburgh residents, saw the return of passenger services on Edinburghs South Suburban Railway (ESSR) as the top suggestion by members of the public for improving Edinburghs transport system, despite it currently not being part of the City Mobility Plan.

Could there be more electrification in Scotland? The five years from 2019 could feature more wiring in Scotland, with ScotRail Alliance Managing Director Alex Hynes telling RAIL: Id love to see more electrification - Stirling to Perth, East Kilbride and the Edinburgh South Suburban. Hynes acknowledged that the East Coast Main Line would need work to increase its capacity, as more operators plan trains to and from Scotland.

Proposals to run hybrid train-trams on the South Suburban rail line have received a boost from the boss of ScotRail.
Managing director Phil Verster told MSPs they offered a real practical solution to easing pressure on the rail network. Tram-trains, which are being trialled in Yorkshire and are widely used in Europe, can run on both tram and train tracks. They could be introduced in Edinburgh under plans by Network Rail to electrify the South Sub to divert more freight trains from running through Waverley. The tram-trains could run into the city centre before switching to tracks on streets. Mr Verster was previously involved with the Yorkshire experiment in his last job as Network Rails London North East route managing director. Tram-trains would run on Edinburgh's South Suburban rail line under plans to be considered by city leaders. Officials have been asked to carry out a study into the possibility of running the hybrid trams from Newcraighall to Haymarket, where they would transfer to the city's new tram line out to Edinburgh Park.

Stretches of disused train track have been earmarked for sale in a move which transport groups fear will harm the future development of the city's rail network.
A stretch of disused railway land at Abbeyhill and a former brewery railway siding at Haymarket station have been identified by the property arm of the now defunct British Rail as suitable for being sold off. The track at Abbeyhill is known as the Abbeyhill loop and runs from the east coast main line under London Road and on to the Lochend Butterfly site. It was last used by trains in the mid-1980s. Patrick Hutton of the Capital Rail Action Group (CRAG) said Edinburgh needs to protect key transport assets like the Abbeyhill loop and the Haymarket sidings. The short term gain for developers is nothing compared to the wider public interest in both protecting and improving public transport provision in Edinburgh. With the reopening of the Waverley route and the current campaign to reopen the South Suburban, it is absolutely essential that this route be protected to enhance capacity at the east side of the city.
