Scenic trains with larger windows are being considered by ScotRail for a new greener fleet on lines in the Highlands popular with tourists. They could operate on the West Highland Line to Mallaig which has been a major draw for Harry Potter fans, and the Far North Line to Thurso and Wick.

Network Rail Scotland is committing £329,000 for Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) to use in what is the most ambitious biodiversity enhancement project ever to take place on Scotland's Railway.

It is seen as a big day out for Harry Potter fans but the Hogwarts rail experience is rather less magical for others. Councils have written to the steam train's operator about human waste being emptied from its lavatories on to the track. ... Councillors raised concerns about the smell last year and have now asked West coast to cease its 30-minute stops at Glenfinnan station because of waste being emptied on to the track. Hege Hernes, manager of the station museum, told Glenfinnan community council 'We understand that when people need to go they have to, but we cannot put at risk the health and welfare of our staff and volunteers.'

A new play which pays homage to the classic film Brief Encounter is to be performed at stations on the West Highland Line next week [10th to 15th April].
Brief Encounters on the West Highland Line will be staged at Arisaig, Corrour, Glenfinnan, and Rannoch station on the route between Glasgow and Mallaig. Station buildings at Rannoch and Corrour will be used for the 50-minute production from Tuesday, along with nearby halls and hotels at Arisaig and Glenfinnan. A wildfire next to the railway line at Glenfinnan in the Highlands disrupted train services between Glasgow and Mallaig for several hours on Friday.
The line at the scene was closed and trains were terminating and starting back from Fort William until it was reopened. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it was alerted to the blaze at about 11:00. It said the flames had affected an area of 50 acres. (Permalink) Glenfinnan |
