One of Scotlands highest-risk public road level crossings could be replaced with a bridge, under newly revealed multi-million-pound plans. A proposed £8.7 million scheme would divert the road south of Markle and include a bridge over the busy East Coast Main Line.

Noise from the barrier alarms disturb residents who said closing it would be a 'kindness' while council officers feared impatient drivers would risk being struck by trains rather than wait. A woman died at the level crossing after being struck by a train in 2011 and a man was killed in 2016.
