Stephen Chaytow of the Manchester and East Midlands Rail Action Partnership (MEMRAP) discusses the groups campaign to restore and upgrade the peaks and dales railway. The former Peak Line was closed in 1968 by Barbara Castle, having delivered East Midlands to North-West connectivity for 101 years.

The Monsal Trail is a much-loved walking and cycling route, but pressure is building for trains to return, restoring a direct link between Derby and Manchester. Meandering across spectacular viaducts bridging limestone cliffs that drop into the River Wye, the Monsal Trail is considered one of the most scenic walking and cycling routes in the UK. With slopes covered in purple orchids and cowslips in May, and ox-eye daisies, bloody cranesbill and a lilac dusting of small scabious later in the year, the trail rewards walkers with stunning scenery across the Peak District.

More than 13,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Monsal Trail to remain a route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders and not be used to reinstate the Buxton to Matlock railway line.

The train now standing at Buxton's platform one is definitely not the 10.52 service to Matlock. It therefore will not be calling at Millers Dale, Monsal Dale, Great Longstone, Hassop, Bakewell, Haddon Hall, Rowsley and Darley Dale.
