There has been pressure for nearly 20 years to re-open Reston station on the East Coast Main Line.
It lies on a bus route linking Eyemouth and Duns, and the village has been poised for residential expansion pending the construction of the station. The Scottish Government made a commitment to the project, and Scotrail produced a draft timetable, which would be by extension of local services between Edinburgh and Dunbar, while the Scottish Borders Council committed a proportion of the funds required, and also committed to local development. It was announced that the station would open and services begun in late 2016. Nothing has happened, however, except that the commitment to construct it has been transferred to Network Rail, which has it in its budget for 2019-2024, and Scotrail has gone back on providing services. Mothballed [this is misleading] railway stations are set to reopen after more than half a century after services for stops at the platforms were written into the next ScotRail franchise.
Stations at East Linton, in East Lothian, and Reston, in Berwickshire, will be included in the two-hourly service between Edinburgh and Berwick under the new planning timetable. Both were closed following the Beeching Report of 1964 which moved to axe rail routes amid increased competition from road haulage services. If momentum continues trains could be running through both stations as early as December 2016. Scottish Borders Council has increased its financial commitment to reopening a railway station at Reston.
The authority had previously confirmed £300,000 towards the project but that has risen to £1.28m. Council leader David Parker said rail accessibility was important for the 'future social and economic well-being of east Berwickshire'. He said he believed the increase in the proposed level of funding could 'only bode well for the station plans'. A study into a local rail service between Edinburgh and Berwick-Upon-Tweed was submitted to the Scottish government late last year. It recommended establishing a service from Edinburgh to Dunbar and Berwick-upon-Tweed, together with new stations at East Linton and Reston.
