County School: The former station at County School in Norfolk has the distinction of having been opened for rail business twice and pushed into dereliction twice. Its first lease of life was 1886 to 1964, freight trains passing through for the next 17 years. After all traffic ceased and 8 years of quiet decay, it was happily restored as a working rail heritage centre. Unfortunately, that venture failed in 1995 and the trains vanished once more. Another period of track-lifting and dereliction ensued, before some basic care and maintenance led to an improved outlook as a static museum awaiting connection to the Mid Norfolk Railway at Dereham. Third time lucky? This photo shows the station in its first period of decline, on March 20th 1977.

Covelinhas: Most Douro Valley trains pass through the wayside station of Covelinhas without stopping and this picture was taken through the rear corridor connection window of a Pocinho to Porto fast train. Only one platform now in use as the line in front of the main building and goods shed is disused but, as seems to be the case with most CP stations, there is still a small but very clean toilet block available to the public.

Alegria: Kyle of Lochalsh train? No - but there is an English Electric loco at the head of three coaches heading for Porto alongside the Douro. The train is about to enter the tunnel that will take it down past the river dam. These Portuguese 1400 Class locos are very similar to the EE Class 20s and sound wonderful as they pass through the valley calling at every station.

Regua: Modelling challenge? The Douro Valley main line is mixed gauge from the junction at Corgo to the large station at Regua, where the tracks fan out into separate yards and bays on either side of the line. This view of the complicated pointwork is from the window in the rear corridor connection of a Pocinho to Porto train approaching Regua.

Regua: View from the rear of a Douro Valley train from Pocinho arriving in Regua in March 2008. From the junction with the (now closed) Corgo line to Vila Real (See image [[18600]]) the train has run over mixed gauge tracks to the station throat where the narrow gauge diverged into the bays. This main line service will continue to Porto.

Douro Valley Portugal (CP Rail)
Mark Bartlett 2008

Pocinho: Information overload. CP Rail's rolling stock numbering system seems to have got a little out of hand - and all these older vehicles have similar plates. This coach was one of three in an EE loco hauled train waiting to return from the Pocinho terminus, near the Spanish border, down the Douro Valley to Porto on the coast.

Douro Valley Portugal (CP Rail)
Mark Bartlett 2008

Pinhao: The whistling English Electric exhaust of the CP1400 (EE Type 1) echoes off the steep hillsides and the houses close to the line as it accelerates its three coaches away from Pinhao station. The train is just crossing a tributary of the River Douro on its way down to Porto. Later in the year the hillside terraces will be covered in vines in this Port producing region.

Douro Valley Portugal (CP Rail)
Mark Bartlett 2008

Pocinho: English Electric (Type 1) CP 1400 Class No. 1455 has just run round its three coaches at the Pocinho railhead near the Spanish border and is waiting to begin the 110 mile journey back to Porto along the Douro valley. These locos share duties with 3 car DMUs on this line.

Tua: Mixed gauge transhipment point at Tua viewed from a Douro Valley train. The turntable in the foreground is broad gauge and the far one is metre gauge. Both lines run in front of the crane allowing easy transfer of goods to the Tua to Mirandela line although sadly the NG freight trains no longer run.

Douro Valley Portugal (CP Rail)
Mark Bartlett 2008

Corgo: Mixed gauge tracks. The broad gauge Douro line and the metre gauge Corgo line ran as mixed gauge east from Regua station across the Corgo river before separating. Corgo station can be seen on the left as can the narrow gauge depot and the line curving left to run to Vila Real. Straight on for Pinhao and Pocinho. The metre gauge line has since been closed.

Douro Valley Portugal (CP Rail)
Mark Bartlett 2008

Regua: A metre gauge railbus for Vila Real stands in the bay platform at Regua on 20th March 2008. The Corgo line as it was known originally ran to Chaves but was cut back to Vila Real in 1990. One year after this picture was taken the railway closed due to the condition of the track. The closure was supposed to be temporary but the line has never reopened and the track in Vila Real station has since been lifted.

Ferradosa: The English Electric exhaust of CP 1455 makes its familiar whistle as it leaves Ferradosa station and moves towards the river bridge, which is the only point between Pocinho and Oporto on the 110 mile Douro Valley line where the railway actually crosses the River Douro.

The steps up from alongside the A67 meet a farm access road half way, on the far side of which a second flight leads up to the station itself. Part of the remains can be seen just above the steps (see image [[28262]]), while the medieval castle - like structure on the right is the remains of a goods shed. Between the two ruins is the roof of a large farm building that now stands on the trackbed. In operational days, the line passed above the camera position on a bridge over the A67.

Bowes: Looking west along part of the former Stainmore route in 2010, on the climb west from Barnard Castle, with the remains of Bowes station behind the camera. The line once continued straight ahead via a long demolished bridge over the A67. In todays much changed layout the road bridge top left carries the A66 'Bowes Bypass', which meets the A67 'off' ramp beyond the trees in the background. At this point the trackbed now becomes part of the A66 TransPennine trunk route. For a same day view back from alongside the A67 see image [[28447]].

Bowes: The crumbling remains of Bowes station looking west towards Stainmore Summit on a wet and windswept 20 March 2010. The old station stands on what is now farm land, near the junction of the A66 and A67, with a section of the trackbed to the west of this point now forming part of the Trans-Pennine trunk route. Given the weather in this part of the world it can only be a matter of time before the remaining standing sections of the old building collapse completely.

Nearest the camera on the left is the remains of a former goods shed, while the crumbling buildings in the background are on the old Barnard Castle bound platform. The station site now occupies farmland, with an access road crossing the site and a large farm building built over the trackbed just off picture to the right.

The discovery was made during preparation work for a major new Network Rail operating centre and training facility. The York South roundhouses were built by the North Eastern Railway in 1864 on land to the south-west of the station and were used to service and stable steam locomotives until the early 1960s. They featured a central turntable with a number of short roads leading off it that could hold one locomotive each. Although the buildings were demolished after closure, the foundations and pits were simply filled in and covered over.
2012Harry Potter train on track for the Borders [Border Telegraph]FOUR of the biggest tourist train operators in Scotland have backed proposals for an upgrade of the planned rail terminus in Tweedbank. It plans to increase revenue from 2bn euros to 3bn euros ($4bn; £2.5bn) over the next few years. Last July, Hitachi won a £1.2bn deal to make the next generation of inter-city trains in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, where it is building a factory. Virgin Trains East Coast are marketing these trains as Azuma. which is Japanese for ^east^. The trains are part of the Hitachi A-Train family, most of them will be built in northern England. The A-Train design concept includes several elements, the core features being that the vehicle car bodies (walls, roof, floor) are constructed from double skin aluminium extruded sections which are friction stir welded and the hollow extruded mounting rails on the vehicle body to which modular components can be attached. Class 800 trains will travel on the East Coast Main Line between London Kings Cross and Scotland, plus the Great Western Main Line between London Paddington station and South Wales.
