Southend-on-Sea Victoria: 321335 at Southend Victoria, waiting time on a service to London Liverpool Street, on 23rd April 2014. This station, terminus of the branch from Shenfield, was opened by the GER for freight in 1888 and to passengers in 1889 and is one of the busiest outer suburban lines out of Liverpool Street, serving the dormitory towns of Billericay, Wickford, Rayleigh, Hockley and Rochford. Wickford is the junction for the Crouch Valley Line to Southminster, opened at the same time and on 18th July 2011 an additional station was opened on the Southend line to serve Southend Airport. This might have been better off on a short branch line; as it is, airport passengers with all their luggage have to share the same trains with hundreds of London commuters.
Prittlewell: Prittlewell station is the first and last stop from and to Southend Victoria that opened with the GER line from Shenfield in 1889 and since the 1950s has been a busy outer commuter route to and from London Liverpool Street. The name Southend derives from the fact that, in the Middle Ages, it was a settlement at the south end of Prittlewell Parish and Southend today is now the largest town in Essex with the world's longest pier. It is not really 'on Sea' but on that part of the Thames Estuary where it widens out to meet the North Sea at Shoeburyness. This photograph was taken from a train to Southend calling on 23rd April 2014.
Yorkhill Yard: This is a road access to the goods yard from the east - at Sandyford Street. View to east. The hill from Ferry Road was very steep and would have defeated horses. Now the yard is under blocks of flats.

The Blea Moor Up distant can be seen in in the foreground. [Editor's note: Bill raises a good question - we use Blea Moor since many sources use this.]
Ribblehead Viaduct: Commemorative plaque at the base of Ribblehead Viaduct near the right of way to Gunnerfleet. The shot was taken directly into the sun and it was impossible to avoid some flare at the top of the picture!

Leicester Midland: We passenger vehicles earn revenue, you know. We don't like to mix with the maintenance machines. A distinct separation of classes at Leicester on April 23rd.
Nottingham (Lace Market) [Tram]: You have to have some patience to photograph so few pedestrians! A Southbound tram approaches the Lace Market stop in central Nottingham. Notice the diamond-shaped speed limit sign for trams on the left.
Nottingham (Ruddington Lane) [Tram]: This tram is returning from the Clifton South terminus to Nottingham city centre. It has just curved onto the very straight see image [[10962]] GCR trackbed, which went straight ahead South through the vegetation visible under the distant road bridge.

Leicester Midland: The 20.37 to St Pancras awaiting its departure time at Leicester on 23 April 2016.
Nottingham [Tram]: I never saw the GCR bridge over the Midland station, but I guess it wasn't as wide as the replacement built for the trams; which brings to mind the 'streets in the sky' concept for the flats overlooking Sheffield Midland station see image [[51624]]. View south in April 2016.
Sinclairtown [1st]: These locos at Sinclairtown can clearly be seen from the train, until the trees come into leaf. I believe they belong to a scrap merchant. Why is nobody saving them?
Clifton South: Another new tram terminus served by Nottingham Express Transit see image [[54967]] is Clifton South, opened in the autumn of 2015.
Leicester Midland: Class 20, 50, and 56 locomotives stored at Leicester in April 2016.
Blunsdon: GWR 2-8-0T 4247, seen leaving Blunsdon, is 100 years old this year, though I doubt much of the original is still there. The loco is working on the Swindon and Cricklade Railway for three weekends before moving onto the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway.
Hayes Knoll: GWR 2-8-0T 4247, celebrating its 100th birthday in 2016, working on the Swindon and Cricklade Railway leaving Hayes Knoll.

Broughty Ferry: Platform raising is in progress at Broughty Ferry.
Sourlie Coal Pit No 26: Looking south west across the capped shaft of Sourlie Pit towards the trackbed of the Doura branch. There was a junction here with a spur going off south west to serve Fergushill Pit numbers 29 and 30. Sourlie was numbered 26 according to the OS maps. Prior to 1900 the main branch continued south from here. Sourlie was the last pit in the area served by the branch and closed some time in the mid 1940s not making it into the nationalised era. A small private drift mine existed on the site possibly into the early 1970s. The track from here back to Blacklands Junction had been lifted prior to 1949 according to aerial photographs taken at that time. The small square opening in the cap just goes down a foot or so to another level of concrete.

Shotts: From 22nd April 2019 the Class 385 EMUs have taken over services on the Shotts line, as seen here with 385019 the following day.
Whittingham Hospital: Although the Whittingham Hospital Railway was only two miles long it had a substantial long cutting, embankments and a skew arch bridge crossing Brabiner Lane near the hospital boundary. The line closed in 1957 and the bridge was completely demolished in the 1970s but these concrete fence posts mark the spot where it crossed the road. Brabiner Lane is narrow and very busy at peak times. This view taken at dusk on 23rd April 2019.

Prestonpans: A Kings Cross bound service seen speeding through Prestonpans on 23 April 2019. In fact it was going at such speed that I wasn't expecting to capture it quite so close, but at least its dynamic. Oh, please yourselves.
Niddrie North Junction [Lothian Lines]: Course of the Lothian Lines 'main' line seen looking north on the approach to Niddrie North Junction. There was no level crossing here as the street didn't exist when the line closed. In a bit of a boob the Gilberstoun estate was still at the planning stage when it first appeared on Bartholomew's Edinburgh Street Guide. Goes to show that phantom streets predate satnav. Photographed incidental to my daily exercise permitted under emergency coronavirus legislation.
Edinburgh Waverley: Edinburgh Waverley Station was lit up blue to show solidarity with key workers and front-line NHS staff all across the country.
Edinburgh Waverley: Edinburgh Waverley Station was lit up blue to show solidarity with key workers and front-line NHS staff all across the country. Edinburgh's main station joined with other Network Rail stations and structures across the UK and famous venues and attractions like Glasgow's SSE Hydro and Falkirk's Kelpies in lighting up in NHS colours to salute the continued dedication and efforts of healthcare workers in the battle against the coronavirus. The booking office at Waverley, including its ornate dome, was lit-up blue as a beacon of hope and symbol of support and solidarity with all our key workers.
Portobello Freightliner Terminal: Cute, isn't it? Craigentinny Wheel Lathe (actually in Portobello, not Craigentinny) has this remote controlled shunter seen standing outside the shed on 23 April 2020. In the background is the quietly rusting mobile crane of the old Freightliner Terminal. There used to be two of them and I would watch their stately toings and froings from the 8th floor of Portobello High School when I wasn't paying attention to Higher Geography (or was it Spanish?). Photographed incidental to my daily exercise permitted under emergency coronavirus legislation.
Uffington: A Colas Rail Freight surplus of Class 70s, 70808, 70802 and 70809 eastbound at Uffington, working from Westbury Up T.C. to Hinksey Sidings, Rep. No 020V, on 23rd April 2021
Uffington: Spring colours at Uffington as low-geared Freightliner 66601 passes westbound with stone empties from Banbury Reservoir Tarmac to Bristol Freightliner Terminal. 23rd April 2021.
Rossie Viaduct: Colas 70816 on 6B38 crossing Rossie Viaduct heading to Caledonia Papermill on 23rd April 2021.
Rossie Viaduct: 68017 'Hornet' approaches Rossie Viaduct from the south on the 4A13 working for Craiginches yard.
Garstang and Catterall: I always thought that this bridge, where the old Knott End line left the Lancaster and Preston Junction, was in Garstang but according to recently affixed Network Rail signs I may have been wrong all this time. Colas 70815 heads north with the Chirk to Carlisle log empties on 23rd April 2021. (Error reported to Network Rail but apparently I am wrong and the computer is right - this is Salwick!).
King's Norton: 66751 'Inspiration Delivered Hitachi Rail Europe' looks rather clean for a weedkilling train loco. Perhaps it had just arrived at King's Norton, and the class 20s I had previously seen in these sidings were hauling Vintage Trains services from Tyseley to Stratford-on-Avon. Just a wild guess, of course.
Barton and Broughton: Bulleid Battle of Britian 34067 'Tangmere' with support coach heads for home on 23 April 2022 after hauling a Northern Belle tour from Carnforth to Carlisle via Shap and back to Preston via the S&C, The loco is seen passing Barton and Broughton loop on the Preston to Carnforth move while the Northern Belle went back to York diesel hauled.
Whalley Viaduct: Bulleid BB class Pacific 34067 'Tangmere' hauls the 'Northern Belle Settle & Carlisle Steam Special' to the west of Whalley Viaduct at the start of the climb to Wilpshire on 23 April 2022.
Birkett Tunnel: 34067 'Tangmere' heads the Northern Belle 1Z87, 14:19 Carlisle to Telford Central, on 23rd April 2022. It is approaching Birkett tunnel on a very windy afternoon. I chose the cutting as the trees form a windbreak preventing the exhaust from blowing down which it did seconds later.
Barton and Broughton: A Class 397 EMU, on a TPE service from Manchester Airport to Carlisle, passes the north end of Barton and Broughton Down Passenger Loop in the early evening of 23 April 2022.

King's Norton: Unit 323241 for Four Oaks slows to pick up passengers at Kings Norton on 23rd April 2022.
Slochd Viaduct: Rebuilt Royal Scot No.46115 'Scots Guardsman' runs over Slochd Viaduct with 'The Great Britain XIV' railtour on the way to Inverness on 23rd April 2022. West Coast 47802 was on the rear.

2007 | Rail land sale sparks fear for future of city network. [Edinburgh Evening News 21/04/2007] | Stretches of disused train track have been earmarked for sale in a move which transport groups fear will harm the future development of the city’s rail network. A stretch of disused railway land at Abbeyhill and a former brewery railway siding at Haymarket station have been identified by the property arm of the now defunct British Rail as suitable for being sold off. The track at Abbeyhill is known as the Abbeyhill loop and runs from the east coast main line under London Road and on to the Lochend Butterfly site. It was last used by trains in the mid-1980s. Patrick Hutton of the Capital Rail Action Group (CRAG) said ‘Edinburgh needs to protect key transport assets like the Abbeyhill loop and the Haymarket sidings. The short term gain for developers is nothing compared to the wider public interest in both protecting and improving public transport provision in Edinburgh. With the reopening of the Waverley route and the current campaign to reopen the South Suburban, it is absolutely essential that this route be protected to enhance capacity at the east side of the city.’ [See entry of 13 April for details of CRAG and related websites-Ed.] |

The class 365 train arrived in Glasgow yesterday for testing and driver training. The fleet is expected to enter service around June, operating mainly as eight-carriage trains, compared to six on many current services. It will help ease overcrowding caused by delays to new Hitachi trains, and four others leaving ScotRail because their leases have expired. However, ScotRail has still to reach formal agreement to lease the trains, previously run by Govia Thameslink. |
2018 | Aberdeen to Dyce Line railway to be doubled [Press and Journal] | Work on the multi-million-pound upgrade of the Aberdeen to Dyce railway line will begin within weeks, Network Rail has confirmed. The line will be closed from May 12 to August 20 as engineers overhaul the line to improve services between the east coast and the north. That will temporarily increase some journey times and buses will replace trains between Aberdeen and Dyce during the works. Once complete, however, the wider Scottish Government-funded Aberdeen to Inverness Improvement Project will provide a day-time hourly commuter service between Inverness and Elgin by December 2018 and a half-hourly service between Aberdeen and Inverurie by the end of 2019.
