Wemyss Bay: 'TS Duchess of Montrose' taking on passengers at Wemyss Bay pier, on a busy summer Saturday in 1964.
St Margarets Shed: A shed visit to St. Margaret's on Sunday 4th July 1965 produced one particularly unexpected 'cop', Kingmoor 9F No. 92009 which was stabled in the open on the south side of the shed building. Although unusual, this wouldn't have been a unique occurrence because at least sixteen 12A 9Fs are known to have worked over the Waverley route and these would all have visited St. Margaret's for servicing after bringing their freights into Millerhill Yard. The other possibility is that Motherwell shed might have purloined a visiting loco for a Mossend to Millerhill freight but as the loco is facing in the right diction for setting off south on the Monday morning I would regard this as less likely.
Corkerhill Shed: The doyen of the B.R. Standard 2-6-4 tanks, No 80000, is resting at its home depot, of Corkerhill on 4 July 1965. The honour of being the first built belonged however, to 80010, which Brighton Works produced several months before 80000 emerged from Derby.

An eastbound freight arriving from Bog Junction on the goods lines is about to join the main line, with the signal beyond the road bridge indicating a route set for the N&C at Petteril Bidge Junction. The spur from Upperby can also be seen coming in from the right between the signal box and the bridge. The siding running off to the left once served the yard of crane makers Cowans, Sheldon & Co.

Cullen: Cullen station on the 4th of July 1973 looking to Aberdeen. This location is now a housing estate. A similar building can still be found further east on the same former line at Portsoy.
York: The soaring train sheds of the Victorian era had the practical feature of not trapping smoke at platform level - something which also proved useful during the Deltic era! No. 55001 'St Paddy' arrives at York with the Sunday 09.50 Kings Cross to Edinburgh on 4 July 1976, a dated train hence the use of Mk 1 stock.
Scarborough: 92220 Evening Star sets off from Scarborough late on the afternoon of 4th July 1976 with the Scarborough Flyer special returning to Newcastle.
York: BR Standard class 9F 2-10-0 no 92220 'Evening Star' waits on the down centre road in York station on 4 July 1976 prior to taking over the NELPG's 'Scarborough Spa Flyer', which it will work to the seaside resort and back.
York: BR standard class 9F 2-10-0 no 92220 'Evening Star' backs down from the NRM into York station on 4 July 1976 to await the arrival of the 'Scarborough Spa Flyer'.
York: The down centre road at York sees the unusual sight of double-headed class 47s arriving on an excursion (1Z17) on 4 July 1976. It is unlikely that both locos were under power because 47199, the leading loco, worked the train forward on its own, having removed 47145, which in all probability had failed earlier.
York: 92220 Evening Star stands on the down through line between platforms 8 and 9 at York while waiting to take over the 'The Scarborough Flyer' excursion' on 4 July 1976 see image [[40958]]. On the right 37101 approaches on the up through line with excursion 1Z24, destination unknown. The displaying of reporting numbers had been officially abandoned some months previously and this was a rare exception to the new rules.
York: The curved trainshed at York forms a magnificent backdrop to 9F No. 92220 Evening Star blowing-off impatiently as it waits to take over the Scarborough Flyer excursion in July 1976. The train started its journey from Newcastle round the Durham coast behind Stephenson valve gear Black 5 No. 4767, with class 40 diesel power taking over at Stockton for the second leg along the ECML.
Scarborough: The mid '70s still saw significant numbers of loco hauled trains arriving at Scarborough during the summer season and a station pilot was indispensable. 08170 propels a mixed rake of Mk 1 and Mk 2 coaches back into the station late on a Sunday afternoon in July 1976.
Scarborough: 92220 Evening Star is about to set back at Falsgrave box onto the stock of 'The Scarborough Flyer' for Newcastle in July 1976. The 9F took the train as far as York, where it handed over to a class 40 diesel. Steam took over once again at Stockton in the form of the Stephenson valve gear Black 5, LMS No. 4767, for the run along the Durham coast.
Scarborough: During the late afternoon of 4th July 1976, 31253 sets off from Scarborough, past Falsgrave signal box, with a returning Sunday excursion. The locomotive was allocated to Holbeck at the time so the train's destination is almost certainly in West Yorkshire.
York: Deltic No. 55005 The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire brings the Sunday 10.00 Kings Cross - Aberdeen into York on 4th July 1976.
Scarborough: Peak No. 45004 Royal Irish Fusilier sets off past Falsgrave box in July 1976 with Sunday excursion 1Z86, returning day-trippers from Scarborough to the Midlands.

Abbey and West Dereham: An intermediate station on the Stoke Ferry to Denver branch, Abbey and West Dereham station lost its passenger service as early as September 1930. Goods traffic continued, however, and trains passed through here on behalf of the nearby Wissington sugar refinery until 1982. This scene was recorded on 4th July 1981, shortly before an enthusiasts charter train arrived. Most of the rest of the country was indoors to watch John McEnroe finally defeat Bjorn Borg at Wimbledon.
Newcastle Central: Deltic 55018 Ballymoss with the 1A39 Kings Cross relief service at Newcastle Central platform 10 on 4 July 1981.
Foynes: The road approach to Foynes station, Co Limerick, in July 1988. The station was closed to passenger traffic in February 1963 but freight traffic continued until the late 1990s see image [[33823]]. The line from Limerick was 'mothballed' in 2001.
Aviemore: An NBL built 0-4-0 DH shunter stands on the turntable at Aviemore on the Strathspey Railway in July 1991. The pit had been filled in after the shed closed in BR days and the mechanical parts were subsequently recovered from Kyle of Lochalsh.
Aviemore: Having called at Aviemore, the rear power car of 'The Highland Chieftain' is seen disappearing northwards on 4th July 1991.
Dalfaber Level Crossing: Class 27 no D5394 approaching Aviemore from the north on the Speyside line on 04 July 1991. The locomotive is on its way to collect the 'Royal Scotsman' and haul it to its overnight stop at Boat of Garten.

Holyhead: Celtic Fringes. 37 408 Loch Long, some way from home, with a train at Holyhead on 4 July 1993.

Kitzbühel: Passenger and freight trains crossing at Kitzbühel, to the east of Innsbruck in the Austrian Tyrol in the summer of 1998.
Headstone Lane: Class 47 in 'Police' livery on a northbound car-train at Headstone Lane. As I took this picture, with the train approaching, the 47 was making such a racket I thought it was going to collapse into pieces !
Eastfield TMD: Eastfield looking south after some track was laid and shed framework erected in July 2004.
South Hylton: The Tyne & Wear Metro terminus at South Hylton in July 2004. A train for St James waits at the platform.

Grantshouse: GNER Edinburgh - London service north of Grantshouse in July 2006.
Glenochil Ground Frame: Trackbed of the line serving the former Glenochil Colliery on 4 July looking west towards its junction with the Alva branch.
Bude: There arent too many signs today that the railway once made it to the north Cornish town of Bude. In 2008, whilst on holiday in the area, I discovered this former railway bridge over the River Neet. Although not part of the mainline, this bridge carried a branch from near the station to a goods yard at the harbour and canal wharf serving coal and agricultural merchants. In this view northwards, the station site was to the right.
Glasgow Central: 92036 departs from Platform 1 for Polmadie with the empty Glasgow Central portion of the Caledonian Sleeper on 4 July 2008.
Whitstone and Bridgerule: Looking east over thr the site of the former Whitstone and Bridgerule station towards Holsworthy on the line from Halwill Junction to Bude on 4 July 2008. It is now more than 40 years since trains ran on this line but the station building and platform canopy remain, now as part of a private house. The area between the platforms has been filled in and grassed over but the edge slabs are still clearly visible.
Bude: Another photo trying to identify where the railway was once located in Bude. At the time the photo was taken, the feature that caught my eye was the concrete fence in the middle of the picture. It reminded me of the style of fence used by the Southern Railway. A check on NLS maps has shown that the railway was indeed on the other side of the fence, the site of the station was behind the large building in the background and the engine shed to the left of it. Photo taken from beside Kings Hill Road looking north in July 2008.
Kilcreggan Pier: In a view taken from the Oban to Glasgow seaplane service on 4 July 2008 PS Waverley is seen leaving Kilcreggan Pier and sailing west down the Clyde.

Slochd Summit: A4 Pacific no 60009 Union of South Africa climbs the gradient to Slochd Summit on 4 July 2009. This time the headboard reads SRPS Railtours presumably changed at the water stop at Aviemore. The engine is working hard despite the lack of exhaust which is due to the temperature being around 28C. In the background a quiet spell on the ever busy A9 and to the right, Slochd Viaduct.

Penwortham: Immediately south of the River Ribble tram bridge See image [[29701]] the old Lancaster Canal Tramroad enters these woods and runs for around three quarters of a mile almost dead straight. It is a popular traffic free route into Preston and has survived the 150 years or so since closure remarkably well. View south at SD 542287.
Preston (Old Tram Bridge): What is known as the Old Tram Bridge in Preston is in fact a 1965 built replica of the original timber trestle bridge that it replaced. Immediately beyond the bridge lies the old rope worked inclined plane, now a steep driveway through Avenham Park. When the horse drawn tramway was closed around 1864 the timber bridge was gifted to Preston Corporation and used as a footbridge to cross the River Ribble for over 100 years before becoming delapidated. The replica was then constructed in concrete and steel to replace it but it has also become unsafe and is presently (2020) closed off. The old tramroad can be followed south from here for around a mile towards Bamber Bridge See image [[28468]].

Loch Tay: Near the Loch Tay terminus of the Killin Branch, erosion has revealed the stone block construction of the railway embankment/trackbed where it runs very close to the loch. In this view from the beach the line runs from left (Killin) to right (Loch Tay) with the minor public road beyond.
Killin Viaduct: Although now closed for almost fifty years there are still several places on the Killin branch trackbed where the old sleepers can be seen, embedded in the ash ballast. This one is by the wicket gate just to the east of the bridge over the River Lochay. Killin station itself was just over the bridge.

Peterborough: On display at Railworld, Peterborough, is Tracked Hovercraft Ltd experimental vehicle RTV31 and a surviving section of guideway. The system was based on a combination of 2 British inventions, the Hovercraft and the linear induction motor but development work was abandoned in 1973 due to budget cuts. Photographed on 4 July 2012 from a passing train.
Ely: A Class 365 EMU arrives at Ely on 4 July 2012 with a Kings Lynn to London Kings Cross service as HGVs start to move over the level crossing at the north end of the station. Although there is an underpass for cars and small vans, larger vehicles have to use the crossing which can lead to significant delays as rail traffic at times can be fairly busy.

Leicester: Looking south through Leicester station on 4 July 2012.
Nuneaton: A Turbostar coasts into Nuneaton's platform 6 on its way to Birmingham. Notice the rusty rails on the next track, which links the WCML to the Leicester line. It may be signalled, but I have never seen it used. Network Rail - reinstated Leicester-Birmingham flyover line
Goerlitz: Part of Germany's longest stone-arch viaduct, spanning the Lausitzer Neisse river at Goerlitz between Germany and Poland. Built between 1844 and 1847, the viaduct has 30 arches, is 35m high and 475m long, and was partly destroyed by bombing in the closing weeks of World War 2. Here the 06.35 Wroclaw (formerly Breslau) to Dresden Regional-Express inches past engineering work on 4th July 2013.
Goerlitz: Goerlitz in Sachsen has one of the best preserved town centres in central Europe, but here and there beautifully restored grandeur still sits cheek-by-jowl with decaying urban fabric. With a population of just 50,000, the town has no less than two tram routes (take note, Edinburgh), both of which pass the Hauptbahnhof forecourt, seen here on 4th July 2013.

Grenoble: TAG Alstom Citadis 402 tram 6021 is one of a batch of 35 introduced to Grenoble in 2005. Here it is, dwarfed by a nearby Alp, and westward bound on a Line B service into Place Notre Dame in July 2014. It will head into the city centre and on to its terminus at the Palais de Justice. This line is currently being extended into the north west of the city to serve the scientific community centred on the European Synchotron Radiation Facility.
Coalville Town: Back in the 1960s, British councils and British Rail alike rushed to rid the country of scenes like this. Looking towards the railway bridge over Mantle Lane, Coalville, in July 2014. The roof of Mantle Lane signalbox (with the disused sidings beyond) can just be seen through the guard on the left. [Ref query 12450]
Coalville Town: Another old-fashioned view of Coalville in July 2014, showing Mantle Lane signal box see image [[48056]]. The Korean-made 4x4 passing under the bridge says as much about the changing distribution of industry and trade around the world as quite a few pictures of abandoned railways.
