Tickets and labels: Contrary to popular rumour, 1858 was a bit before my time. This is one of our smaller family heirlooms, which my mother gave me a few years before she passed away. It was first copied to Gary Thornton's railtour website, which has an even older charter train ticket.

Crown Street Goods: Ivatt class 2MT 2-6-0 no 46455 brings a freight out of Crown Street goods depot, Carlisle, in July 1958 across a double track bridge spanning 3 sets of lines. Those nearest are the goods lines from Upperby, in the centre are those from London Road and furthest away are the N&C/S&C passenger lines into Citadel station. The WCML can be seen on the extreme left of the picture. Although best known as a goods depot, Crown Street began life in 1844 as the site of the passenger terminus of the Maryport & Carlisle Railway, a function it performed for only 5 years, following which trains switched to Citadel. Crown Street goods depot lasted much longer however, being officially closed as such in 1966, although most of the track had been lifted the previous year. The deck of the bridge in the photograph had been removed by 1971. See image [[5345]]

Carlisle Kingmoor Shed: A notable visitor to Kingmoor on 5 July 1958. The much travelled Stanier 8F no 48773 was built by the North British Locomotive Co in 1940 for the War Department (works no 24607). It was originally intended to operate in France but was instead sent to Persia in 1941, becoming Persian State Railways no 41-109. During its time in Persia the locomotive sustained damage in a derailment following a collision with a camel. In 1944 it was converted to oil firing. Four years later it went to Suez where it was almost scrapped following major mechanical problems but eventually made its way back to Derby Works for attention during 1952. Following overhaul the locomotive emerged as WD no 500 and was sent to the Longmoor Military Railway. The 8F was taken into BR stock in 1957, becoming no 48773 and allocated to Polmadie shed. Withdrawal came in 1962, only to see it reinstated in November the following year at Kingmoor (some records show an intervening temporary reinstatment between February and July 1963 while still at Polmadie). After a number of further moves the locomotive's final BR port of call was Rose Grove, from where it was withdrawn by BR for the last time in August 1968, having hauled the MRTS/SVRS 'Farewell to Steam' special a few days earlier see image [[36292]]. Today 48773 can be seen on display in the Engine House at Highley on the Severn Valley Railway.

Bury Knowsley Street: Crossing the hump. As part of the ELR extension from Bury to Heywood in the 1990s, a bridge was built to span the Metrolink tracks from Bury Interchange, requiring trains between Bury Bolton Street and Heywood to tackle a 1 in 36 gradient in order to cross the busy route from Manchester Victoria. The bridge is referred to locally as the hump. The photograph is taken from the window of a train heading west towards Bolton Street on the ELR behind 55022 Royal Scots Grey as it traverses the hump on 5 July 2009. (The bridge stands on the site of the former Bury Knowsley Street station, where, for at short period in the early 1980s, following the opening of the new Bury Interchange station, a flat crossing existed.) Both the road bridges have been modified in preparation for electrication but this isn't 2022, this was 2014 and the project to electrify from Manchester to Leeds was later shelved by the SoS for Transport. The result was that a very long extension lead was required to connect the Network Rail feeder station to the east of Stalybridge, to the bit that did go ahead from Victoria to Euxton Jct. Common sense appears to prevail again and electrification for the Victoria to Stalybridge section I believe is underway again at the moment.

Cardrona: There wasn't much to Cardrona when the railway arrived: just an adjacent mains and nearby Horsburgh Castle Farm. Some public housing appeared between the wars, then a large golf hotel was built over Horsburgh Castle Farm and there has been some more recent housing. Despite this growth the old station seems no longer to be the village store but 'Nashy's Coffee House'. Local lads turn up to find that the X62 on the Edinburgh to Melrose route isn't going their way. The half-hourly service is not something the railway could have ever matched, I venture.

Samnan: A view of the new alignment and the North portal (right background) of the new cut and cover tunnel under Gamla Uppsala. The railway alignment has partly taken over the previous highway alignment. This in turn was, a thousand years ago, what now appears to have been a pagan ceremonial colonade in the vicinity of the infamous Uppsala pagan temple site. The new double track railway, which takes trains away from the historic area and eliminates 3 level crossings, is due to open in autumn 2017.

Samnan: View of the existing sinuous single track route looking north east at Samnan level crossing north of Gamla Uppsala. The new double track alignment can be seen as the pale grey construction curving in from the right. The reason for the odd arrangement is that a new underbridge has been opened which was designed to fit on the new alignment and this is less than ideal for the current alignment which has remained open for low-speed train movements throughout the construction period.

Eshiels Tunnel: The first time a Railscot contributor (Colin Harkins, see image [[10790]]) photographed this tunnel, 1 mile east of Peebles, it was spooky and neglected. Hesselby Bangård: The society which re-established the railway on the Isle of Gotland, Föreningen Gotlandståget (Gotlands Train Society) originally intended to preserve a train which the Swedish National Railway Mueum owned on the island in 1972. Gradually they expanded into Hesselby station in the mid 1970s. Eventually the station yard (bangård) was rebuilt to its former maximum extent with loco shed, carriage shed, turntable and workshops etc. This view shows the basic secondary platform between the running lines. Also shown are freight and engineering waggons, a diesel shunting loco and some rail bikes (dressiner). These latter are 3-wheeled rail vehicles which are hired out to visitors to cycle the route on days when trains are not running; maybe British preserved railways could be doing likewise to generate extra revenue?

Hesselby Bangård: The diesel shunter hurries off to retrieve the service train from the far end of the line. A grass fire had broken out and to avoid any further occurrences the railway decided to withdraw the steam loco from service. This is a type Z4p from 1956 ordered by SJ which had by then taken over Gotland's passenger railways. A few of this type were shipped out to the island possibly on the deck of a fishing boat and shipped back about 4 years later for use elsewhere on the 891mm network after all the island's lines had closed.

Hesselby Bangård: Ordered from Henschel & Sohn of Cassel, 2-8-0 loco No. 18152 Dalhem was built in 1920. Post-Great War hyperinflation in Germany meant that, as the Reichsmark devalued, so the deposit paid for this loco eventually covered not only its full purchase price but also allowed the private railway, Slite-Roma Jerväg (SlRJ), to buy other rolling stock. Here the loco has returned light engine from Roma (at the far end of the current line) due to the risk of lineside fires. For a shot of the loco hauling the train see image [[60090]].

Kneippbyn Isle of Gotland: This family resort featues a very short and compact narrow gauge (?500mm) railway. The picture shows how tight the curves are on this. Both ends of the train are visible but facing in opposite directions and the train is 'loco' plus 3 cars i.e. less than 10 metres long. From what was visible the arrangement is 2 pairs of axles per bogie with 2 bogies per vehicle and the wheels are approx. 10 cm in diameter. The bodies are pastel coloured plastic which almost totally cover the underframes. The 'loco' seems to be electrically driven, probably using power from batteries and the train is remotely controlled. It was test run each morning around 07.20, co-incidentally at the same time as the bread was coming out of the oven at the on-site bakery, long before the crowds were allowed in.

The bus has just passed the abutments of the bridge that carried the Lothian Lines from Wanton Walls to Niddrie North see image [[64908]] and is currently running alongside the surviving south abutment of the adjacent bridge that stood on the route to Niddrie West Junction. Much of the trackbed of the latter has been obliterated by housing developments in recent years, including the under construction 'Newcraighall Village' as advertised on the board alongside the road entrance on the left.

Morningside Road: The former ticket office at Morningside Road, looking good 56 years after closure. With the sun in the right place the lettering MORNINGSIDE ROAD STATION can be made out beneath the names of the current occupiers, the enamel sign having been painted over. The station is right in the heart of this douce suburb, so why 'Road' was added is a mystery. For a view down the steps to the platform from the gate on the right see image [[7593]].

Summerseat: Class 24s are not stylish locos, but D5054 has recently been refurbished and looked and sounded great as it pulled away from Summerseat with a six coach train for Rawtenstall on 5th July 2019. This loco survived into preservation as, after main line withdrawal, it was used for several years as a departmental Train Heating Unit. It has been on the ELR since 1987 and is named 'Phil Southern' after one of the pioneers of the East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society.
