Edinburgh Gateway [Tram]: A York Place tram pulls into Edinburgh Gateway, greeted by the usual hordes, on 12th August 2017.
Rossall Square: Most of the Blackpool Tramway runs alongside (or along) the road but the stretch between the Rossall School and Heathfield Road stops is on an independent alignment. Flexity 009, heading for Fleetwood, runs between the houses and across South Strand level crossing as it approaches the stop at Rossall Square on 12th August 2017.
Becconsall: Hunslet quartet plus two at the end of the first day of the West Lancashire Light Railway 'Nearly 50 Gala' on 12 August 2017. This year is the 50th anniversary of the start of the railway by 6 local schoolboys and as part of the summer celebration, the railway's Hunslet loco Irish Mail was joined by visitors Jack Lane, Statfold and Cloister. All 4 were in steam on both days but the line up at the end of day 1 had O&K Utrilas and Kerr Stuart Joffre from the 'home' fleet added for the photo.
Rossall Square: The modern tram stop at Rossall Square has been shoehorned in between the houses and there are no shelters or seating on the narrow platforms. Flexity 007, heading for Blackpool, slows to call on 12th August 2017.
Donibristle Platform: 44871 drops down Donibristle bank just short of its Dalgety Bay stop with the SRPS Fife Circle & Borders excursion on a damp 12 August. @srpsrailtours
Haymarket: SRPS Linlithgow-Tweedbank train. In low light, but here is the SRPS train leaving Haymarket for Fife.
Lower Edmonton (Low Level): More than two months after Angel Road station closed, replaced by the new Meridian Water, this sign pointing to the former station is still in place at the start of the footpath/cycle way to Montagu Road. This runs along the course of the former Eastern Counties Railway branch of 1849, closed to passengers in 1939 and freight in 1964, seen here on 12th August 2019.
Edinburgh Waverley: LNER DVTs 82223 and 82208 stand at Waverley platforms 6 and 5 on 12 August 2019.
Edmonton Green: Edmonton Green station, which retains its attractive Victorian platform canopies, looking south to Liverpool Street, on 12th August 2019. This station was opened by the Great Eastern Railway in 1872 and was known as Lower Edmonton for many years until renamed Edmonton Green in 1992. It is the junction for the lines to Enfield Town and Cheshunt which were transferred from Abellio Greater Anglia to Transport for London as part of London Overground in May 2015. The low level station on the original 1849 Eastern Counties Railway route to Enfield from Angel Road closed in 1939 and all trace of this has completely disappeared.
Glasgow Central: A second series of 'Inside Central Station' is in production by STV during the summer of 2019.
Lower Edmonton (Low Level): The site of Lower Edmonton (Low Level) station with the still open high level station, now known as Edmonton Green, in the background, on the afternoon of Monday, 12th August 2019. This has been part of London Overground since May 2015; to the right of the bridge the 1872 line curves sharply from north to north-west and originally made a connection with the original 1849 route from Angel Road, closed to passengers in 1939 and to freight in 1964, just beyond the station.
Stoke Newington: The rather unappealing rebuilt entrance to Stoke Newington station, dating from the early 1970s, about 100 years after the station opened in 1872, on the afternoon of Monday, 12th August 2019. The Victorian platform canopies, which like the old entrance I remember as a boy, disappeared about the same time, thanks - or rather no thanks - to the old BR regime's idea of 'improvements'. The station is on the line from London Liverpool Street to Enfield Town and Cheshunt which became part of London Overground in May 2015.
Edmonton Green: Exterior of the east side of Edmonton Green station, London Overground since 2015, on 12th August 2019. This station opened as Edmonton on 27th July 1872 when the line was extended from Stoke Newington to a connection with the Angel Road to Enfield Town line just north-west of the station and was renamed Lower Edmonton (High Level) on 1st July 1883. The original Edmonton station of 1849 on the line from Angel Road, which was to the left where the road roundabout now is, became Lower Edmonton (Low Level) at the same time; after this closed to passengers in 1939, the high level suffix was dropped from the surviving station. In 1992, the name Edmonton Green was chosen to define the area more correctly and this became the name of the station although my research has been unable to discover the exact date the station was renamed.
Edmonton Green: Edmonton Green station, opened by the GER in 1872 and known as Lower Edmonton until 1992, looking north-west towards Enfield Town and Cheshunt, on 12th August 2019. Just beyond the station, the 1872 route made a connection with the original Eastern Counties Railway route of 1849 from Angel Road while further north west at Bury Street Junction, the Southbury Loop of 1891 diverges to Cheshunt. This opened as the Churchbury Loop in 1891 but suffered from tramway competition and closed to passengers in 1909 but reopened during the First World War only to close again in 1919. It was fully reopened in November 1960 with the electrification of the north-east London routes from Liverpool Street with three reopened stations, Southbury (formerly Churchbury), Turkey Street (formerly Forty Hill) and Theobald's Grove, the only one to retain its original name.
Stoke Newington: 317729 with a London Overground service to Liverpool Street calling at Stoke Newington station, serving the north London suburb where I was born, looking south on 12th August 2019. This station opened on 27th May 1872 as the temporary terminus of the GER's 'cut-off' route to Lower Edmonton (now Edmonton Green), to which it was completed on 22nd July 1872 and where a connection was made with the original 1849 Eastern Counties line from Angel Road to Enfield Town. The new route shortened the journey to London for Enfield residents but a shuttle service on the original line survived between Angel Road and the low level station at Lower Edmonton, as the area was then called, until 1939.
Glasgow Central: Although the Class 314s have been steadily making their way to the scrapyard they could still be seen at Glasgow Central on 12th August 2019.
Blackhorse Road [LTPB]: A view down the escalator at the LUL Victoria Line station at Blackhorse Road, on 12th August 2019. This opened with the first stage of the line from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington on 1st September 1968 and down which I travelled on that very first day. When opened, this was the only station on the new line that did not have a direct connection to a British Rail station. This was rectified when the separate 1894 station, across the road on the Gospel Oak to Barking line was closed and re-sited with new platforms on the west side of the road bridge, allowing direct interchange with the Victoria Line, on 14th December 1981.
Harringay Green Lanes: Brand new Aventra 710262 with a London Overground GOBLIN service from Gospel Oak to Barking arriving at Harringay Green Lanes station, in pouring rain, on 12th August 2019. This is the former Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway of 1868 but the station here, a wooden structure, did not open until 1st June 1880 as Green Lanes. It was renamed Harringay Park, Green Lanes in 1883 and further renamed simply Harringay Park in 1951. On 27th October 1958 - my 7th birthday, you can do the maths! - it became Harringay Stadium. The wooden platforms and shelters were replaced by concrete structures around the same time with extra long platforms to cater for visitors to the stadium but these were shortened in 2003 due to subsidence and the shelters were also replaced by structures offering less protection from the elements. After the stadium was demolished in 1990 the station was further renamed Harringay East, notwithstanding that it is more south than east of Harringay. This misnomer, however, was swept away a little over a year later on 8th July 1991 when the station became Harringay Green Lanes, almost the name it started out with in 1880.
Blackhorse Road: 66715 with a westbound freight about to pass through Blackhorse Road station on the London Overground GOBLIN line. 710262 is departing with a Gospel Oak to Barking service as a DW type bus crosses overhead, on the wet afternoon of 12th August 2019. Both trains are passing the site of the original 1894 Blackhorse Road station where only the weed-infested ramps to the now demolished platforms remain.
Blackhorse Road [LTPB]: LUL 2009 stock with a Victoria Line service from Walthamstow Central to Brixton arriving at its first port of call at Blackhorse Road station, on 12th August 2019. These trains were manufactured by Bombardier at their Litchurch Lane Works in Derby and entered service on the Victoria Line between July 2009 and June 2011, replacing the 1967 stock that had operated on the line since its initial first stage opening in 1968.
Paisley Canal: 318264 at Paisley Canal on 12th August 2019.
Blackhorse Road: 710262 with a London Overground GOBLIN service from Gospel Oak to Barking departing from the 1981 station at Blackhorse Road and about to pass the site of the 1894 station, beyond the bridge with a DW type bus crossing, in pouring rain on 12th August 2019. Since the station's re-siting in 1981 giving it a direct connection with the LUL Victoria Line, Blackhorse Road is now the busiest intermediate station on the GOBLIN line.
Blackhorse Road [LTPB]: One of the features of the new Victoria Line, as it was in 1968, (hard to believe its more than 50 years now since the first section opened) was a series of murals at each station, repeated the length of the platform, that had some kind of link, however tenuous, with the station name. This one at Blackhorse Road is fairly obvious and dates from the station's opening, looking towards Walthamstow Central on 12th August 2019.
Blackhorse Road: Brand new Aventra 710262 with a London Overground GOBLIN service from Gospel Oak to Barking calling at Blackhorse Road station. This view looks back west, in pouring rain on the afternoon of Monday, 12th August 2019. The original station here opened with the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway on 9th July 1894 and was sited on the east side of the Walthamstow thoroughfare from which it took its name. On 1st September 1968, LUL's sparkling new Victoria Line, the first deep-level tube across London for more than 60 years, opened and had a separate station on the opposite side of the road to the BR station. Passengers had to trot between the two in all weathers, crossing the busy road on the level. The situation was rectified on 14th December 1981 when the Barking line station, which had fallen into an advanced state of decrepitude, was re-sited on the west side of Blackhorse Road with a direct interchange to the Victoria Line and this is the 1981 station seen in this view.
Paisley Canal: 320315 at Paisley Canal on 12th May 2019. These units were not used on the branch before the May timetable change.
Tottenham Hale: The always busy entrance to the National Rail station at Tottenham Hale, on the Lea Valley Line, on 12th August 2019. This station was opened as Tottenham by the Northern & Eastern Railway from Stratford to Broxbourne on 15th September 1840 which was leased to the Eastern Counties Railway in 1844 and became part of the Great Eastern Railway in 1862. It was renamed Tottenham Hale on 1st September 1968 when it became an interchange with the then new LUL Victoria Line.
Edmonton Green: 315810, with a London Overground service from Liverpool Street to Cheshunt, arriving at Edmonton Green (formerly Lower Edmonton), on 12th August 2019.
Meridian Water: Exterior of the new Meridian Water station on the Lea Valley Line in north London. Photograph taken through the window of a TfL bus on route 192 from Tottenham Hale to Enfield, on 12th August 2019, just over two months since the station opened on 3rd June after a series of delays. Its opening saw the demise of the nearby Angel Road station that had served the area since 1840.
Montagu Road Level Crossing: View along the former Lower Edmonton to Angel Road section of the old Enfield branch, looking towards the site of Montagu Road level crossing, on 12th August 2019. This section closed to passengers in 1939, and to freight in 1964, but Edmonton Green to Enfield Town is still served by London Overground trains via the 1872 line from Bethnal Green. Thus one part of the 1849 Enfield line is still intensively used as a commuter route while the other part, as seen here, has been completely abandoned.
Lower Edmonton (Low Level): Approaching Edmonton Green (formerly Lower Edmonton) at the north-west end of the footpath/cycle way along the former line from Angel Road, closed to passengers in 1939 and freight in 1964, on the afternoon of Monday, 12th August 2019. The line originally ran straight ahead through where the buildings of part of the Edmonton Green shopping centre now stand and then passed through the low level station at Lower Edmonton before joining the GER route from Bethnal Green (which had, as it still does, a separate high level station) just beyond the latter.
Eastleigh East Yard: GBRf liveried 50049 and 50007, together with two barrier coaches, in the sidings at Eastleigh on 12th August 2020.
Eastleigh: Freightliner 66519 static in the sidings at Eastleigh alongside Colas classmate 66847. 12th August 2020.
Eastleigh: GBRf 66774 resting in Platform 1 at Eastleigh before heading north on 12th August 2020.
Eastleigh: SWT liveried 158882, calling at Eastleigh, with a London South Western service for Romsey and Salisbury on 12th August 2020.

Carlisle: Poster promoting the Borders Line extension, seen at Carlisle Citadel in August 2020.
Eastleigh: Freightliner 70001, northbound from Southampton MCT to Trafford Park FLT, is framed by canopy stanchions as it passes through the platforms at Eastleigh on 12th August 2020.
Eastleigh: On a trip to Eastleigh on 12th August 2020 both 08511 and 08460 were shunting PWay wagons here there and everywhere. This image is of 08511 and there was plenty of grunting going on.
Little Bispham [Tram]: The tight turning circle at Little Bispham can make even a long Flexity tram look quite short. 009 sits on the loop, while the crew enjoy a short break, before resuming evening services on the core section of the tramway on 12th August 2021.
Levenshulme: Most of the TfW Class 175s have now been reliveried in white and red but 175106 was still in Arriva colours as it passed through Levenshulme at the start of the long journey to Camarthen on 9th August 2021. At this point the Up and Down lines are paired but at Slade Lane Junction, just beyond the station, they move to Down Up Down Up for the run into Piccadilly
Kings Cross: Azuma at Kings Cross waiting to depart with the 13.30 to Edinburgh Waverley, on 12th August 2021. Smart to look at from the outside but I was not impressed by the hard seats for the 393 miles journey and my reserved seat was rear facing, up against a panel so I couldn't see anything until I was able to change seats at Newcastle. The trolley service was also absent and, soon after departure, we were told the buffet was closing at Newcastle but it quickly ran out of refreshments and closed long before then. Not a good trip.
Burntisland: A1 60163 'Tornado' eases off Burntisland Viaduct with 'The Aberdonian' on 12 August 2021.
Dalmuir: An Airdrie to Balloch service arrives at Dalmuir on 12 August 2021.
Balloch Pier: Maid of the Loch on the slipway at Balloch Pier for inspection of the hull and perhaps a lick of paint to the area normally below the waterline. Photographed behind the railings next to the steam winch house on 12 August 2021.
Scotstounhill: 318263 on a Whifflet to Dalmuir service departs from Scotstounhill on 12 August 2021 as 320315 heads the other way with a Dalmuir to Whifflet service.
Jordanhill: 320306 departs from Jordanhill on 12 August 2021 with a Dalmuir to Cumbernauld via Motherwell service.
Yoker: A Helensburgh to Edinburgh service passes Yoker on 12 August 2021. Unusual for these services, 334020 was solo on this run and not paired with another set. The train is seen heading east passing under Mill Road
Clydebank: 334006 departs from Clydebank heading east on 12 August 2021. The train is believed to have been working between Dalmuir and Whifflet.
Manors: The north end of the remaining island platform at Manors, just north of Newcastle Central, seen looking back from the ex-13.30 Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley service, the rear of which can be seen in the background passing the obsolete weed-infested south end of the station, on 12th August 2021.
Garscadden: There is only one way in and one way out at Garscadden and this is it. A view east from the top of the steps to the island platform in August 2021.
Loanhead: The surfaced path between Roslin and Loanhead, built on the trackbed of the EL&R, was extended north beyond the former Loanhead station in 2011. This 2021 view shows the meeting point of the original path and the northern extension. The old Loanhead station building still stands alongside. Note the roundel on top of the signpost which refers to what is now The Rosslyn Chapel Way. (With thanks to Messrs Brown and da Vinci).
Burscough Bridge: At first glance an unremarkable picture, but it was snapped from a Sprinter heading for Ormskirk as it crossed the Wigan to Southport line on 10th August 2022. The nearer train is heading for Wigan, while in the distance another is calling at Burscough Bridge. There are recurring plans to divert the trains from Preston round a reopened north to west curve, and extend Ormskirk EMUs round a reopened south to west curve, to make Burscough Bridge a very good interchange point between the three lines. See image [[78118]]. It remains to be seen if this will come to fruition but it seems more logical than some other recent reopening proposals.
Wyre Viaduct: In fifty years of 'linesiding' I had not seen this before. Open Train Times was showing a signal fault at Bay Horse on 12th August 2022 and it was clearly affecting PN199 at Scorton too. I thought perhaps a remote reboot was applied as soon afterwards it illuminated normally and shortly after that a Pendolino passed at normal speed. I'm advised though that the signals are not computer based and this was more likely a power supply blip.
