Istanbul Haydarpasa: Steam locos were somewhat limited in Istanbul in 1975, only working in and back out again. Haymarket: The recently published Haymarket redevelopment plan, aimed at accommodating the new tram interchange, included the proposed demolition of station local Ryries (1862). The hostelry was photographed on 6 September 2007 during an enjoyable visit for research purposes. Haymarket station stands beyond, with The Caledonian Alehouse on the far right. This latter watering hole, also dating from the 1860s and formerly known as the Haymarket Station Bar, is also under threat as part of the redevelopment proposal.

Dalston Kingsland: In the last couple of months of the Silverlink regime, 313116 for Stratford departs from Dalston Kingsland station, on 6th September 2007. The line was taken over the following November by Transport for London and re-christened London Overground. This station was opened in 1985 on the site of the former Kingsland station that lasted only from 1850 to 1865, when it was replaced by Dalston Junction on the NLR's branch to its City terminus at Broad Street. This closed in 1986 but a new Dalston Junction on the same site was opened in April 2010 when the Broad Street branch was partially reopened as an extension of the London Overground and linked by a new section of track at Shoreditch to the former London Underground East London Line.

Closed by BR in 1963, it was the original southern terminus of the first part of the line from Bridgnorth to be revived as a heritage railway in 1970. The line now, of course, extends all the way to Kidderminster Town although Bewdley to Kidderminster was never part of the original SVR which originally continued south to Hartlebury. Coincidentally, BR passenger services between Bewdley and Kidderminster and Bewdley and Hartlebury ceased in 1970, just as the first section of the revived SVR opened.

There it was put into store in June 1967 and officially withdrawn on 2nd December that year. Rescued from Woodham's scrapyard at Barry by the Midland Railway Trust, Butterley in 1972, a full restoration did not begin until 1993 and it was not until 22nd February 2004 that the locomotive was steamed again.

Edinburgh Waverley: The next stage of the extension of Platform 12 has begun with the closure of the escalator which is being relocated to be out of the way of the new buffers. The building in the background, which will of course have to go, looks ready for demolition.

Arniston Colliery Emily Pit: Looking south east on 6 September 2017 along the embankment that once carried the mineral line from Engine Road south towards the Gore Pit and the exchange sidings on the north side of the Waverley route west of Gorebridge station. Part of the surrounding area had been cordoned off recently while work was carried out on a burning bing associated with the nearby Emily Pit. Happily the problem has now been resolved and the restrictions lifted see image [[54902]].

Dinant: There are some really nice old buildings in Dinant, but the flat roofed concrete station is not one of them. It does however have a good service of trains and is seen here from the ramparts of the Citadel, high above the old town, on 6th September 2017. A Class 08 EMU waits in a platform before proceeding north to Brussels Airport.

Paliseul: A SNCB freight, hauled by electric loco 1317, heading north towards Dinant passes through Paliseul station on 6th September 2017. Although it has a reasonable service of trains, unstaffed Paliseul had a BR 1970s feel about it with two basic shelters and a disused former railway building falling into disrepair.

Arniston Colliery Emily Pit: Looking rather incongruous amid the greenery at Arniston is the surviving north abutment of the bridge that once carried the spoil tramway from the Emily Pit across the Gore Pit access road, in order to reach the south bing. Newbattle Viaduct: A plaque will be displayed on the Sun Inn to celebrate the Newbattle Viaduct. The plaque reads 'National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark - Newbattle Viaduct - a 23 arch masonry viaduct designed by John Miller with brick arch rings characteristic of Miller's Practice. The easternmost arch over the A7 is a skewed arch. Opened in 1849. It replaced and earlier unique 24 span cast-iron pointed arch and timber structure of 1830 built by the Marquess of Lothian for horse-drawn waons of coal. It carried the Edinburgh and Hawick Railway, which from 1862 became the Waverley Line [Route] to Carlisle. Anglo-Scottish expresses went over here until closure in 1969, and after the last freight ceased in 1972 the viaduct was to be without rails until the coming of the Borders Railway, which opened in 2015. Newhaven Junction: A very minor railway junction makes an odd entry in the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland (1885, my collection). What is even odder is that it surely didn't exist. Bangholm is where the CR Leith Line crossed the NBR Granton branch, which is what they must have meant, but there was never a chord between them. Nearby Trinity Junction was NBR only.
