Due to poor connections from ferries at Ryde Pier the line was extended from Ryde Esplanade to Ryde Pier Head jointly by the London and South Western Railway and the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. This extension was to be used by the Isle of Wight Railway and the Isle of Wight Central Railway.

Line closed between Shanklin (excluded) and Ventnor due to the poor condition of the tunnel to the north of Ventnor station. This tunnel is intact and in use today for the water supply pipe for Ventnor. The remaining line has been electrified using the London Underground third rail system and a service operates using London Underground type trains.
