Newtyle and Coupar Angus Railway

Introduction

This early railway is closed. The company provided a service between Coupar Angus and Newtyle [1st]. It was a 4 ft 6.5 in line, 5 1/3 miles long.

It became part of the Scottish Midland Junction Railway and the line upgraded and re-gauged. With this it became an important part of the West Coast railways route from London to Aberdeen.

Line sold to the Scottish Midland Junction Railway. It was then closed and upgraded to standard gauge and two tracks between Coupar Angus and Ardler Junction. (Alternative date: 1845).

Scottish Midland Junction Railway line opened from Perth to Forfar [2nd]. Forfar (Playfield) closed to passengers. The line incorporates most of the former Newtyle and Glammis Railway and Newtyle and Coupar Angus Railway.

Last portion of original line closed by the operator, the Dundee and Perth Railway, between Newtyle [1st] and Meigle Upper Junction, an interchange station near Eassie, where there was a break of gauge. (The Newtyle and Coupar Angus Railway was already completely closed by this date.) Re-opened shortly afterwards having been converted to Standard Gauge.

Separation of the Ardler Junction and Alyth Junction routes moved from Newtyle Junction to the north end of Newtyle [2nd], junction and station both remodelled. Newtyle Junction signal box closed and replaced by a ground frame off the Alyth Junction line for access to the goods yard at Newtyle [1st].

Crash at Ardler Junction. The 4.20pm Dundee West to Blairgowrie service via Newtyle [2nd] passes the home signal at the junction and is struck by the southbound 3.30pm ex-Aberdeen postal express train resulting in the death of 2 people.

Ardler Junction taken out and trailing crossover removed. Line between Ardler Junction (excluded) and Newtyle [2nd] (excluded) officially closed 04/04/1953 and Ardler Junction box closed. Alyth Junction to Newtyle Junction re-opens to passengers.

Newtyle to Coupar Angus

This was the northern terminus of the Dundee and Newtyle Railway. The terminus building still stands. It is one of the oldest stations in Britain and probably the oldest trainshed in existence.

This was a two platform station. There was a level crossing to the east of the station and a goods yard to the west, on the north side of the line and reached by reversal from the northbound (down) line. The station buildings were of Caledonian Railway style typical of the line.
