This railway extended the London and South Western Railway associated railway to Launceston [LSWR], Wadebridge [2nd] and Padstow, which was the furthest the LSWR reached from London. It opened throughout in 1892 and closed in 1966, with many of the former LSWR lines in the area. Padstow was to survive for another year, approached from Bodmin General.
It was part of the system referred to as the 'Withered Arm', the LSWR lines west of Exeter.
The Launceston Steam Railway uses a short portion of the trackbed, running west from a new (in 1983) Launceston station.
This line is divided into a number of portions.
This short portion of line extended the Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway from roughly the site of Wadebridge [1st] station to Padstow. Wadebridge [2nd] station opened to the south east of the first station, on the B&WR. The portion of line from Wadebridge [1st] to Wadebridge Junction was used by the North Cornwall Railway.
This is the eastern terminus of the Launceston Steam Railway, which opened on 26/12/1983 running for half a mile west along the disused trackbed of the former North Cornwall Railway. The station site is west of Launceston [LSWR], the site of which had become an industrial estate.
