Walthamstow Central: Walthamstow Central, looking towards Chingford, at 15.06 on Saturday, 5th October 2024. This station was opened by the GER in 1870 as Hoe Street and renamed in 1968 when it became the terminus of the LU Victoria Line. The 1870 station became part of the London Overground in 2015. Subways, escalators and lifts connect these platforms to the Victoria Line and also a major bus station across the road (left of photo), built on the site of a former recreation ground. There is also now a pedestrian walkway to Walthamstow Queens Road on the Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside line.

Thornton Yard: 08732 is the Thornton Yard pilot in 1983. It was still busy here with Speedlink traffic and coal services. I note in 1974 08732 was an Eastfield loco but by 1976 it was based at Haymarket. At some point, 1983 I think, it became a Dunfermline loco and then reallocated to Thornton Junction itself. My 1986 book shows it as a Motherwell loco. All very interesting but very much a Scottish 08.

Dalston: 68004 'Rapid' and 68003 'Astute' top and tail a three coach set, arriving at the request stop at Dalston on the 08.51 to Barrow-in-Furness on 17th May 2018. This was the last week of the loco hauled trains continuing beyond Barrow-in-Furness, but not the end of loco hauled trains on the Cumbrian Coast line however as the class 68s and 37s each still had a daily diagram between Barrow and Carlisle that continued for several more months.

Bletchley Flyover: The first day of Chiltern Railways operating test trains between Oxford and Milton Keynes Central via Bletchley Flyover, pending introduction of regular passenger services over this section of the Oxford to Cambridge (East-West Rail) route, took place on 21st October 2024. This image shows Chiltern Railways 168323 and 168328 crossing the WCML on Bletchley Flyover, heading back towards Oxford. The land behind the barriers was used as the worksite for the partial demolition and reconstruction of the flyover.

Hunstanton: An example of 1960s 'rationalisation' was Hunstanton, seen here at the start of August 1968. The 2-car DMU waiting to return to Kings Lynn looks insignificant in a station created to handle numerous long trains during the summer peak season and is a reflection of changing holiday patterns in the UK at that time. Passenger services came to an end on 5th May 1969.

Brodick Pier: MV 'Cowal' at Brodick. The photograph is thought to date from 1971, during the relatively short period of operation of the Fairlie-Brodick-Tarbert ferry service. The service had been intended to replace the Gourock-Tarbert 'Royal Route' service which ended in May 1970, but the new service did not last long and finished at the end of September 1971.

Crieff [2nd]: View showing the western approach to Crieff. The line from Comrie entered the view at bottom centre and ran through a short tunnel to reach the site of the station, the carpark which can be seen in the distant right.
