Burghead Blower (1862-1930)

Opened on the Burghead Branch (Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway).

Description

This blower was located south of Burghead [1st] and Burghead [2nd] on the line to Alves. There were two long runs of snowblower style structures, only built on the west side of the line. The structures protected the line from sand being blown onto the railway from the nearby Culbin Sands.

The line suffered from drifting sand being blown from the beach. The solution found was to build blowers (like the snow blowers found elsewhere on the Highland Railway) along a long length of the branch.

Blowers are a large flat sloped wooden structure usually built on either side of the line which cause the wind passing over the line to accelerate such that carried material cannot be dropped.
