Description

This was a two platform station with minimal passenger facilities. It was largely a small goods station. This is an area of low population west of Stonehaven.

There was a siding, on the west side of the line and approached from the north. This survived into the 1980s and was to the south of the signal box which still stands here by the level crossing, west side of the line south side of the crossing. A cottage, possibly a station building, survived on the east side of the line opposite the signal box until the 1980s.

After opening, there was a siding installed on the east side, approached from the south.

A trailing crossover exists, south of the level crossing. Should the need arise, this allows a train from the southbound (up) line to reverse north onto the northbound (down) line (and vice versa).

With such a low population nearby the station went through several different names. New Mill, a corn mill, was to the west. Carmont was some distance to the north east.


Stonehaven Derailment


The serious derailment of a Inter7City train returning north from a landside blocking the line south of Carmont occurred on the 12th of August 2020. This accident led to the deaths of the driver Brett McCullough, conductor Donald Dinnie and passenger Christopher Stuchbury. The accident occurred just over a mile to the north at a bridge over the Carron Water (Carron Water Bridge [West Carmont]). (See News section.)

HST derails after hitting landslide at Carron Water Bridge [West Carmont], three are killed. The train was halted en route south from Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street High Level due to flooding to the south of Carmont. After reversing and returning through Carmont to Stonehaven a landslip is hit derailing the train some of which is destroyed by fire. The line is closed for investigation, clearance and repairs.
