Common Junction (1883-1896)

Opened on the Muirkirk Branch (Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway).

Description

This was the junction for the Common Branch, between Commondyke (to the west) and Lugar (to the east). The branch was approached from the west. It ran north to the Common pits. The branch dated from the 1850s, or earlier.

A box opened in 1883, around the time the line was doubled. This box was on the north side of the junction.

The box and junction closed in 1896. Afterwards the mineral line from Lugar Iron Works approached the collieries.

The trackbed can be walked.
